We love you, Betty White.

Nobody else deserves it, really.

The 2015 People’s Choice Awards took place earlier today in Los Angeles, which ultimately kicked off Hollywood’s awards season.

Currently in its 41st year, the People’s Choice Awards is a ceremony in which winners are chosen entirely by fans. Judging from this year’s list of winners, it seems as though a large percentage of voters is made up of younger fans.

The show was hosted by actors Anna Faris and Allison Janney, who co-star in a sitcom called Moms. Sharing the stage together for the first time as hosts, Faris at 1.65m and Janney at 1.83m, the duo did a decent job of keeping everyone entertained.

Disappointingly, there were hardly any surprise wins. Even Adam Sandler’s haul of the Favourite Comedic Movie Actor award – his ninth People’s Choice win – was expected, seeing as his competitors were Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen and Zac Efron.

“This really means a lot to me. Thanks for all these years, for being so nice to me,” said Sandler.

Seeing 93-year-old Betty White receive a standing ovation for her Favourite TV Icon award was a refreshing change, though.

“When she (Melissa McCarthy, who was on stage to receive her award just before White) said that she’d stay as long as you let her… well, you’ve abused the privilege with me. Can you imagine… the People’s Choice at 93 (years old)?!” said White.

The only living actress of 1980s sitcom Golden Girls and current Hot In Cleveland star, White beat Tim Allen, Mark Harmon, Katey Sagal and Tom Selleck for the award.

Ben Affleck dedicated his award to the people of Congo and those who are constantly helping to rebuild the country.

Ben Affleck, whose Gone Girl was chosen as Favourite Thriller Movie, got an award for Favourite Humanitarian.

“I’ve been called a lot of things in my life, but I’m not sure that humanitarian has been one of them until recently… Sometimes the world is just a terrible and scary place, but one thing I learned by watching people, is trying to do just a little bit…

“The one way to combat the sad things we see, is to try to bring a little bit of kindness into the world,” said Affleck who dedicated the award to “real humanitarians” and to the people of Congo. The actor founded the Eastern Congo Initiative in 2010 to help improve the quality of life of folks who live in the region.

Viola Davis, star of one of last year’s top TV shows How To Get Away With Murder, was named Favourite Actress In A New TV Series. However, the show itself lost out to The Flash in the Favourite New TV Drama category.

Said Davis, “…We actors, we do it for you. We do it to move you, to provoke you. Thank you so much for this. I’m so happy that people have accepted me in this role, at this stage in my career.”

As for the music section, Australian pop group 5 Seconds Of Summer was voted Favourite Breakout Artiste, beating Charli XCX, Fifth Harmony, Meghan Trainor and Sam Smith.

Lady Antebellum and Iggy Azalea both won awards, and performed at the show, as did Fall Out Boy. Below is the full list of winners at the 2015 People’s Choice Awards. You can also go here for a story on the night’s fashion highlights.
