New boy band, 5 Seconds Of Summer, takes the British No 1 spot by surprise – the first time an Australian act has done so in 14 years. The not so surprising thing is they sound exactly like One Direction.

Boy band 5 Seconds Of Summer shot to the top of Britain’s music charts on March 30 with their debut single She Looks So Perfect, the first time a group from Australia has been No 1 here for 14 years, the Official Charts Company said. You can watch the music video here.

The last Australian act to reach No 1 on the British singles charts was Madison Avenue with Don’t Call Me Baby in 2000.

The group – made up of Luke Hemmings, Mikey Clifford, Calum Hood and Ash Irwin – all hail from Sydney, Australia, and have an average age of 18. They came to global attention after posting two cover versions of songs by Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran on YouTube.

Rival boy band One Direction liked their work so much that they then invited them to support them on their world tour.

The Sydney band’s success pushed last week’s No 1 – dance track I Got U by Duke Dumont and Jax Jones – into second place.

Meanwhile, in the albums chart, Sam Bailey, former winner of reality show X Factor and an ex-prison guard, took the top spot with her debut album The Power of Love.

The album has sold nearly 73,000 copies in the last seven days, the Official Charts Company said, making it the fastest-selling album of 2014.
