Nestled in the town of Broga in Semenyih, Selangor, is a hiking trail that’s popular among adventure seekers and fitness buffs.
Broga Hill, which is 400m above sea level, sits on the edge of the Titiwangsa Range, on the border of both Selangor and Negri Sembilan. In Selangor, it is part of Semenyih while in Negri Sembilan, it is part of Lenggeng, Seremban.
Broga gets its name from Sungei Broga which runs through the vicinity. The name itself is believed to have come from “Buragas”, a mythical beast living in the forest. British Army officer and World War II veteran Freddie Spencer Chapman also mentions Broga in his book, The Jungle Is Neutral.
Some scenes from popular local movie OlaBola were also filmed here.
Why you should go
Exercise and (moderate amounts of) sunshine is good for health. And, if you love hiking and the outdoors, Broga Hill is a good place to enjoy the sunrise.
You’ll also get a great view of the surrounding forest, farmland and villages as well as the city skyline in the distance.
Basically, it’s a great place for you to take pictures for your social media accounts (with the added bonus of exercise).
What to do
Start early in the morning so that you can catch the glorious sunrise, and remember to bring your camera, smartphone and/or selfie stick if you wish to take photos.
It gets rather hot by mid-morning because the hilltop is uncovered – there are no trees to shade yourself. It can also get crowded, especially during weekends and public holidays.
Be sure to bring sufficient water and a torch light if you are starting your hike while it is still dark. Pack a picnic lunch that you can enjoy with your family and friends, but remember to leave nothing behind and bring all your trash home with you. As always, remember the rules of nature: “Take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints”. In other words, don’t pollute the area.
The hike takes about 45 minutes to an hour (depending on your fitness level and also whether you stop to take photos). Proper hiking shoes are recommended.
It might also be slippery when it rains, so don’t go during the rainy season.
Who will like it
Casual hikers, nature lovers, trail runners and photography enthusiasts would enjoy going to Broga Hill. The difficulty level is from easy to moderate, so it is something that most people can do.
You can take the train (KTM) or the bus from KL Sentral to Hulu Langat. There, you would need to hire a taxi to get to Broga Hill. You might also have some luck taking a Grab car from the town.
If you’re driving or biking there, use Waze or Google Maps, or follow the GPS coordinates: 2.938501, 101.901267. There is a parking fee of RM1 as well as an entrance fee of RM1 per hiker.
