What do you get when you combine location, retro-styling and independent travellers? Apparently that’s the Kuala Lumpur Journal, one of the newest hotel properties in town located just off Jalan Sultan Ismail on Jalan Beremi.

Opened in December last year, the boutique hotel has 112 rooms all decorated in neutral tones with floor-to-ceiling windows and includes connectivity for all mobile devices including free WiFi in rooms. There are king and twin deluxe rooms with options for eight designer suites.

The views are basically the Golden Triangle of Bukit Bintang, Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Imbi with all the malls a five-minute walk away. And if the view from your room does not satisfy you, they have a rooftop saltwater infinity pool of sorts with the Bukit Bintang skyline on offer and the Petronas Twin Towers peeking through. Great spot to enjoy the fireworks during festivities.

The decor is done up with a nod to the art-deco style, for example, decorative wrought iron grilles and rigged lighting. There are many local-centric memorabilia on display.

In each room there is even an insider guide to KL curated by the KL Journal that gives guests suggestions on how to explore the city and get the best out of their visit.

As it caters to the independent traveller always on the move, there is even a big space called the Workers’ Union where there are work stations or places to plug in your devices. And play is not forgotten with a bar and an open terrace, as well as a kitchen container for drinks and snacks.

Want a bigger meal? There is the Bounty, a bistro offering a daily breakfast and European staples for lunch and dinner.
