There’s a very good reason to make the journey to Kuala Lumpur’s international airports these days – and it doesn’t necessarily involve flying. After months of preparation, the Mitsui Outlet Park KLIA in Sepang officially opened its doors recently.
Located about 6km away from KLIA and KLIA2, the factory outlet store is a shopper’s paradise. Visitors can expect discounts of between 30% and 70% all year round on off-season products from selected mid- to high-end brands.
Some of the international labels on offer include Polo Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss, Tommy Hilfiger, BCBGMAXAZRIA, Topshop, Nike and Converse. There are also homegrown brands, such as Bonia, Akemi Uchi and Carlo Rino at the premises.
The project is helmed by MFMA Development Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between Japanese company Mitsui Fudosan and Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB).
Mitsui Fudosan president and chief executive officer Masanobu Komoda says he hopes to imbue the venue with aspects of culture from both countries.
“We will unite the Malaysian culture and needs with our Japanese style of hospitality,” he offers. That trait is evident at the outlet’s Japan Avenue. Here is where visitors can experience authentic Japanese culture through the traditional art of making tea and culinary delights.
The major real estate developer operates 13 existing outlet malls in Japan. According to Komoda, the experiences acquired from managing and operating their past project have been poured into their latest retail project here.
The Mitsui Outlet Park KLIA features a unique Paradise Village concept with four nature-inspired zones. They are Sunshine Square, Pier Walk, Tropical Plaza and Beach Walk.
Customers patronising Sunshine Square will find luxury concept stores in a spacious area lit by natural skylight. Pier Walk promotes a chic esplanade ambiance while Tropical Plaza and Beach Walk, enriched with greenery, exude a more relaxing mood.
Best of all, the outlet offers 127 stores housed within 24,000sq m of retail space. That’s just the first phase.
MFMA director Tatsuro Irino says the second and third phases will be launched in 2018 and 2021 respectively.
“By then, the Mitsui Outlet Park KLIA will be the biggest factory outlet in South-East Asia,” he explains. Above all, Irino stresses, the outlet blends luxury and affordability, giving shoppers an exciting new option.
More than just a shopping destination, the Mitsui Outlet Park KLIA is one of the first steps taken in the development of the KLIA Aeropolis.
The project will include the development of office buildings, a convention centre, a theme park, and a golf field, among other facilities.
MAHB chairman Tan Sri Datuk Seri Dr Wan Abdul Aziz Wan Abdullah says the KLIA Aeropolis masterplan aims to develop the land around the terminals into an urban hub.
“Various services have been put in place to help our passengers have a seamless and integrated journey,” Wan Abdul Aziz adds.
The Mitsui Outlet Park KLIA boasts the Flight Check-In Centre, a great feature to boost regional travellers’ layover experience. The centre allows visitors to obtain their boarding pass while they shop, as well as provides free baggage storage. In addition to that, travellers can always check the latest flight information.
According to Irino, it’s the first Mitsui Outlet Park to integrate a flight check-in system and flight information displays within its premises. Apart from that, complimentary shuttle bus service is provided to ease commute to and from KLIA and KLIA2.
Mitsui Outlet Park KLIA is targeting over 49 million travellers who are using the airports each year.
Above all, Wan Abdul Aziz envisions Mitsui Outlet Park KLIA to be an exciting and convenient shopping option for travellers.
“We want our process to be as simple and efficient as possible, so that passengers can visit the outlet park in between flights with confidence,” he concludes.
