Love is in the air! Valentine’s Day is tomorrow and if you’re thinking of proposing to that special someone, you might want to plan something memorable. For adventurous couples, here are some “extreme” ideas for you to mull over, but be sure to keep the real ring somewhere safe first.

1. Bungee jumping

This gives new meaning to the phrase “taking the plunge”. If the thrill of bungee jumping excites you, then bring your loved one to do this adrenaline-pumping activity together. You can propose on the platform before the jump. If the venue allows it, you can even place the words “Will you marry me?” where he or she can see it clearly. After your partner completes the jump, meet them at ground level with the ring.

Bungee jumping is available at Sunway Lagoon Extreme Park in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. For more information, visit: https://sunway

2. Paragliding

If you or your partner are into paragliding, going on a tandem flight would be a great way to propose … just don’t drop the ring! Photo: The Star/Azlina Abdullah

For paragliding enthusiasts, go on a tandem flight with your future spouse. If they are afraid of heights but are still willing to do this with you, then you know he or she is for keeps! You can have friends place the “Will you marry me?” wordings at the spot you’re supposed to land. And get a trusted friend to pass you the ring once you’re on the ground.

Tandem flights are available in Selangor (Jugra in Banting, or Kuala Kubu Baru in Kuala Selangor). For more information, visit: or

3. Scuba diving

What better place is there to propose or take pre-wedding photographs for scuba diving enthusiasts than underwater while on a dive? Of course, you need to hire a photographer who dives, too, if you’re planning to do this. You also need to make sure that the bride-to-be wears waterproof makeup and clothing that won’t hinder her movement.

Scuba diving sites in Malaysia can be found at islands in Sabah (Sipadan, Mabul, Layang-Layang, Mataking) and Terengganu (Redang, Lang Tengah, Perhentian). For more information, visit: or

4. Cycling

If you and your partner cycle, you could go cycling to a beautiful location and then pop the question there. It would also help if your friends are hiding nearby with flowers …

Remember to pick less strenuous cycling routes so that you won’t look all tired out and sweaty for the photos. Besides parks and villages with beautiful scenery, you can consider a cycling tour through certain heritage cities like Melaka and Penang where there are gorgeous structures and wall art. These make good backgrounds for those memorable shots.

Some scenic cycling spots suitable for a photoshoot in Malaysia are: Putrajaya Lake, Sekinchan in Selangor, Melaka and Penang.

5. Hiking

If the jungle is like a second-home to you and your loved one, you might want to try a jungle trekking proposal or do your pre-wedding photoshoot session in the forest. Close to nature, among lush greenery and trails with streams and waterfalls, propose to your partner after a hike at a scenic spot.

You can even get your friends to decorate the place with flowers, balloons, and streamers, but do remember to keep the environment clean and bring everything back with you after you’re done. Be sure to bring the insect repellent too.

In Malaysia, there are many hiking trails to check out, but our suggestions include Bukit Gasing Forest (Petaling Jaya), Forest Research Institute Malaysia (Kepong), Broga Hill (Semenyih) and Templer’s Park (Rawang) in Selangor, and Bukit Tabur in KL.
