AirAsia has introduced a new domestic flight to its schedule: Flight AK6284 from Penang to Melaka.

AirAsia Malaysia CEO Riad Asmat said in a statement, “The new route not only provides a boost to local tourism, but also contributes to long-lasting economic growth for the two cities.”

This is the airline’s sixth domestic destination and 14th route from its Penang hub.

Melaka has much to offer travellers. Here are five things you can do in the state:

Go on a heritage walk

The city has many places of interest that you can visit while on a heritage walk. Go on a guided tour or plan your own trip using a reliable street map available from the Tourist Information Office (or download it from the website).

There is a 7km Melaka Heritage Trail you can follow which covers famous historical sites and a shorter one featuring icons from the Dutch colonial era.

Try some local desserts like cendol with gula melaka.

Eat everything

When you’re in Melaka, eat. From chicken rice balls and satay celup to oh chien (oyster omelette) and cendol, Melaka is a great place to satisfy almost all your food cravings.

You can also buy food products as souvenirs like coconut candy, dodol and cincalok.

Shop, shop, shop

From quaint little shops, to night markets, to modern shopping complexes, you can find them all in Melaka. Look out for traditional clothes like embroidered kebayas as well as local handicrafts and rare antiques.

Thrills, spills and chills

Melaka may be a small state but there are still fun theme parks around such as the Skytrex Adventure and A’ Famosa Water Theme Park.

If those are not your thing then head to the interactive museums like Illusion 3D Art Museum, Magic Art 3D Museum and Upside Down House Gallery.

City tour

Don’t worry if you don’t feel like walking around the city. Go on a river cruise or trishaw ride instead. Or, if you prefer, opt for cycling tours.
