Johor’s capital city is bustling as a tourist, entertainment, commercial, shopping and dining hub all rolled into one. If you’re looking for a weekend getaway down south, DoubleTree by Hilton Johor Baru has an interesting deal called the Weekender’s Package that you can check out.
Start your holiday on Friday night – be sure to ask for the hotel brand’s signature warm chocolate chip cookie when you check in! Later, unwind by the poolside or go for an authentic Italian dinner at Tosca.
In the morning, have your breakfast at the Makan Kitchen, an all-day dining restaurant that features both western and Asian fares.
Once you’ve had your fill, head out for a visit to the beautiful Sultan Abu Bakar Mosque and the Istana Besar. The istana, once the Johor royal family’s principal palace, was built to mimic Victorian architecture and style by Sultan Abu Bakar in 1866.
It was turned into a museum and opened to the public in 1990, displaying the incredible wealth of the sultans with over 60,000 pieces. Today, the Istana Besar is the finest museum of its kind in Malaysia with a 53-hectare verdant ground, and the best place to learn about the city. Entry is free.
After that, check out the Legoland theme park. Kids young and old will have loads of fun here. There are roller coasters, rides and other fun activities to be had at this theme park.
There’s also Miniland, which was built with over 30 million Lego bricks featuring famous attractions from 17 Asian countries such as the Petronas Twin Towers, Singapore’s Merlion, India’s Taj Mahal, and even several of Johor’s own unique landmarks.
Stay in for the night and learn to cook laksa Johor (a traditional Malay curry with spaghetti noodles) with the in-house chef.
Those who love to shop can go to the Johor Premium Outlet (JPO), which is just 30 minutes away from the hotel. Once you’re done for the day, head back to the hotel for lunch or sample some goodies from the hi-tea buffet.
