What do you look for when you’re planning a holiday? A hotel with great reviews? An airline with the best service ratings?
Or simply, a whole package that would give you the best value for your money?
A recent consumer study by Expedia reveals that what Malaysian travellers really want are flexibility and savings when making travel arrangements. The study reveals that 52% of the Malaysians surveyed spent more than five hours per month researching for a week-long holiday. Interestingly, this is higher than the number of people who spend time researching for jobs and careers (34%), health and wellness (31%), housing and home improvements (30%), children’s education (26%) and retirement (23%).
When asked what aspect of travel research Malaysians spend most of their time on, the majority responded they are researching for the best hotel and transport deals (79%).
They also spend time on researching for activities and things to do (72%) and reading travel reviews (66%).
So, do Malaysians think that spending time researching and planning will ensure that they get a good deal? Yes – 84% believe so. However, 67% dislike the idea of finding a better deal after they have booked their holiday.
The study shows that Malaysian travellers are a cost-conscious bunch who prefer to save up for their vacation, rather than use their credit or debit card to pay for it.
What do they do with the money they save? Well, 65% spend it on food and drinks while on holiday while 50% save it for their next trip. Also, 48% spend the extra money on excursions, activities or souvenirs while on holiday.
Thorough and rational
From the study, Expedia gathers that Malaysians love to travel, are thorough in research and are rational in their choices. According to Brand Expedia regional head of communications Lavinia Rajaram, Malaysian travellers are a modern, savvy lot and desire convenience, flexibility, and value when booking their travel arrangements.
As such, Expedia has launched the Add-On Advantage to empower Malaysians with the choice of booking a flight or package first, and adding a hotel booking later at a discounted price of up to 58%, right up to the date of departure.
“Our focus is to make things easier, more accessible and enjoyable for people who do research and book their travels online, and provide them with a seamless experience on any device. With this improved travel booking experience, travellers no longer need to visit multiple sites because they know they can get access to guaranteed discounts on accommodation simply from booking a flight or package,” Rajaram added.
The study also reveals that besides being avid travellers, Malaysians are also family and health conscious. The top three activities Malaysians would indulge in if they had two hours to spare each week are spending quality time with family and friends, engaging in some relaxing “me” time, and exercising.
