It’s illuminating how a little bit – or a lot – of lighting can brighten up the vibe and facade of any place by night. We track down three places in Malaysia that you can visit to witness these vivid and colourful displays.

City Of Digital Lights at i-City in Shah Alam, Selangor

The quiet suburban area of i-City is irradiated at night by a million LED lights. The City creates a “lightscape” set in a forest of pine and maple with gem-toned brilliance. There’s also an outdoor theme park. Visitors can go to Mist Fountain and see the lights blur in the thick foggy mist, or be mesmerised by the Dancing Waters, a spectacular display of choreographed audio, lights, lasers and water jets that shoot up 40m.

Penang Avatar Secret Garden in Tanjung Tokong, Penang

Those familiar with James Cameron’s epic film will understand the nomenclature of this attraction. The garden imitates the dazzling world of Pandora featured in his 2009 blockbuster. Located just behind the famous Tua Pek Kong Temple, the attraction is a brilliant display of colours that evoke a dream-like fantasy. There’s a seafood restaurant nearby, so visitors to have dinner before exploring the garden. Admission is free.

Sky Screen at Jalan Ibrahim in Johor Baru, Johor

This permanent structure was installed by the Johor Baru City Council in 2014 to promote tourism, as well as beautify the state capital. Since its inception, the spot has been a popular hangout for folks to enjoy the evening. Visitors can walk along the street to snap pictures of the LED screen. There are six images that randomly change, each one depicting a unique image.
