Drama, extravagance, flair and refinement. All those elements that often enough define couture apply to the red carpet as well. It is no wonder that couturiers tend to have a special relationship with celebrities.
From film festivals to award shows, here are five instances where couture became a fitting standard for an A-list Hollywood star.
1. Zoe Saldana
Where: Academy Awards, 2010
Wearing: Givenchy Haute Couture
Sparkle, ombre, layers of tulle and pops of saturated colour. If there is one word to describe the dress that Zoe Saldana wore, it would be “magical”. She looked like a modern day Disney princess, with just the right touch of glamour.
2. Angelina Jolie
Where: Academy Awards, 2012
Wearing: Atelier Versace
Remember when Angelina Jolie’s right leg made headlines? The actress was wearing couture when that happened. The colour of the dress itself was rather unassuming, but the cut (that well-placed slit!) proved to be a statement.
3. Jennifer Lawrence
Where: Academy Awards, 2013
Wearing: Dior Haute Couture
This dress is a winner all right. Heck, Jennifer Lawrence was awarded her first Oscar wearing it. Then again, she also took a tumble while making her way up on stage to receive it. Those voluminous folds – while a little difficult to manouvere in – are nothing if not breathakingly pretty.
4. Cate Blanchett
Where: Golden Globe Awards, 2014
Wearing: Armani Prive Couture
Some would say that Cate Blanchett can do no wrong when it comes to dressing for the red carpet. This design is a case in point. It has a high neck, an open back and cap sleeves covered with petals of lace. Absolutely chic, yet sultry at the same time.
5. Naomi Watts
Where: Cannes Film Festival, 2015
Wearing: Elie Saab Couture
It had all aspects of a stunner. The feathered train, open back and plunging neckline? Simply jaw-dropping. The gunmetal grey proved to be just the right shade for Naomi Watts too. And, the gown has pockets. How cool is that?
