Metallic and shimmering effects, intense reds and festive nails – this holiday season will be all about glamour, seduction and extravagance when it comes to makeup. We’ve taken a look at the makeup trends in the latest collections from big cosmetic brands.

In contrast to the rest of the year, the year-end celebrations allow us to break the golden rule in makeup of focusing on either the mouth or the eyes. The festive collections enable us to leave that dilemma behind as we go for full-on glamorous makeup right to the tips of our nails.

A translucent complexion

If there is one thing that all the brands agree on this time around, it’s the complexion. This year, skin is allowed to breathe and has a foundation-free look. That does not mean that the complexion does not have to be worked on, but rather that the face should be sculpted and beautified with powder and concealers to give the impression of glowing from within.

Dior has a new pressed powder, Diorific State Of Gold, in two shades (Luxurious Beige and Sumptuous Pink) to highlight the skin’s texture, and Yves Saint Laurent has launched a glamour version (redesigned with red lips) of its Touche Eclat corrector pen.

More intense eye makeup

For a successful holiday makeup look, the eyes have to be emphasised. This year, eyes will have a metallic or shimmery look. With its La Palette 29, Faubourg Saint Honore, Lancome offers six winter and festive shades including tones of beiges, purple, gold and bronze.

Giorgio Armani is going for Hollywood glamour with its Luxe Is More palette which combines no fewer than 10 matte or pearly options including gold, black, beige tones and metallic shades.

Chanel stands out with its emphasis on the rouge noir theme, which has inspired its entire holiday collection. Eyes are dressed with shades from the Creation Exclusive Signe Particulier palette that include dark red, warm saffron gold and lavender.

To enhance the eyes, all the cosmetics brands are offering mascaras that can elongate lashes and add volume. L’Oreal Paris is going for a cat-eye look with its Volume Million Lashes Feline mascara, to be completed with a top coat mascara containing some sparkles to give a glittery effect.

Sensual and glamorous lips

While certain brands are playing the shimmer card with juicy lip glosses, most of them have opted for a long-wear matte finish for an ultra-glamorous look. Unsurprisingly, intense bright red is the star of this holiday season, as is strong pink.

Givenchy has the Rouge Glace lipstick from its Les Nuances Glacees collection, which is a creamy bright red packaged in a pure white tube.

Dior has gone for velvet lips with Diorific Mat, which is enriched with a powder that smooths on the color giving a matte, intense and radiant finish. It is available in soft rose, fuchsia, rich rose, classic red, nude, and prune.

Glittering nails

This year, not all the brands have put the spotlight on nails, and some have not even included nail polishes in their holiday collections. Nevertheless, sparkle will be on offer, in a choice of gold or silver.

Lancome has created its Vernis In Love nail polish in new shades (Rouge Secret, Prune Reve, and Nuit Enchantee) which can be embellished with the Goldleaf Effect Top Coat to give a golden touch.

Dior is also playing the classic card with four elegant shades (intense violet, metallic gold, vibrant red and delicate pearl) in a State Of Gold version of Diorific Vernis with platinum and gold hints.
