Powder pink, peony, fuchsia, terracotta, raspberry, oh my! A pink wave is about to wash over ready-to-wear and luxury alike, brightening the womenswear arena for Autumn 2019.
The first harbinger of the trend was seen on runways last February and March, and has gained a foothold on the red carpets and in the streets as worn by some of fashion’s biggest icons.
So, whether it’s head-to-toe pink, as a pop of colour, or on your accessories, it’s time to catch the wave.
From The Runways
Pink was seen all over the Autumn 2019 shows in New York, London, Milan and Paris this past February and March, waking up an often-sombre palette of blacks, blues, greys, and browns.
Several designers presented collections featuring an array of shades. MSGM went from rose blush to candy pink in the span of a few links.
Pastel and powder pink reigned at Mark Fast and Chika Kisada, while raspberry, bubblegum, and fuchsia took the crown at Iceberg, Roberto Cavalli, Dolce & Gabbana, Jacquemus and Alexander McQueen, which paraded a number of ruffled pink dresses very evocative of roses.
Some of the houses opted for a more subtle approach and added the odd pop of pink to their creations. Prada applied the concept to a number of black, gray and green-dominated outfits in the form of embroideries and floral patterns.
Manish Arora chose a different strategy by offering a multitude of pink shades to choose from as the mood strikes, all through the season.
At the Met Gala
While there were hints of a comeback for pink at the four big Fashion Weeks, it was on May 6, during the Met Gala, that its arrival on the scene was fully asserted.
With “Camp: Notes On Fashion” being the theme of the evening, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s famous stairs were the site of a procession of pink outfits.
From Lady Gaga’s neon pink reveal, to Gisele Bundchen’s terracotta, to Taylor Hill’s rosy beige, Dakota Johnson’s glitter-bomb and Anna Wintour’s pastel, all shades made their appearance, leaving little doubt as to the dominance of pink.
Let’s Hear It For The Boys
Let’s put to rest the myth that pink is for girls only – once and for all. A cursory glance will be all that’s needed this season to fathom that men have also fallen under the spell of pink’s magical seduction and romantic powers.
Last January, during the Autumn/Winter 2019 men’s shows, Acne Studios showed a number of pink pants, while Raf Simons applied a blush to outerwear and accessories.
Berluti draped a red suit with a bright pink coat, while Kenzo layered on sportswear-inspired creations prominently featuring the hue.
Walter Van Beirendonck took a more playful tack, contrasting nuances and textures with a colourful patchwork in different materials.
The idea is reprised on a puffer coat-slash-scarf made of a series of strips, a suit jacket, and even lycra bodysuits. – AFP Relaxnews
