Luxury fashion designer Anna Sui is set to be the focus of a new exhibition launching this fall.
New York’s Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) has announced “The World of Anna Sui”, a major retrospective paying homage to the iconic US creative, known for her artistic, vintage-inspired contemporary clothing.
“Born and bred in Detroit, Anna Sui is a fascinating American design success story,” said Chris Scoates, MAD’s Nanette L. Laitman director, in a statement.
“Season after season, Sui translates popular culture and artisanal making into collections that pulse with excitement, reflect and expand on the creative spirit of the times, and move the needle for what fashion can and should be for a diverse, global market.
“We are extremely excited to welcome our visitors for an unforgettable immersive experience of Anna’s design universe.”
The show will present 75 looks from Sui’s archive, spanning her groundbreaking inaugural 1991 fashion presentation and her Spring 2019 collection.
It will be arranged thematically according to her 13 design archetypes – which include “Rock Star”, “Schoolgirl”, “Punk”, “Nomad” and “Surfer” – and explore the designer’s wide-ranging influences, from the famous London boutique Biba to pirates, pre-Raphaelite maidens and Minnie Mouse.
Iconic garments designed by the star will be accompanied by sketches, mood boards and videos of runway presentations exploring her eclectic fashion career.
Sui rose to prominence in the 1980s, but her work remains as relevant as ever today. Earlier this year, she teamed up with cult footwear brand Teva on a series of sandals and partnered with online retailer ModCloth last fall on a size-inclusive fashion series inspired by her archival pieces and love of vintage prints.
