To commemorate the festive season, Habib has launched its exquisite Auspicious Diamond pendant and Rose Gold necklace. This stunning piece can be found in all Habib’s stores and is retailing for RM1,888.
There is also the Year of the Boar Lunar Gold Bar that bestows good fortune, family blessings and prosperity. It is crafted in 916 pure gold to symbolise good luck and happiness.
Habib’s campaign for the season celebrates Baba Nyonya culture. It draws from the everyday adornments of the Peranakan ladies, who are frequently seen with their kerongsang, hairpin, gold belt and anklet.
The Baba Nyonya, or also known as the Peranakan Chinese, were early traders from China who migrated here and adopted local culture and practices.
“I find the Peranakan Chinese culture truly unique and amazing, especially the history and stories of the jewellery that they wore on day-to-day or for special occasions,” states managing director of Habib Group Datuk Sri Meer Habib.
“Every year, we celebrate Chinese New Year with our campaign called ‘Eastpiration’.
“This year we are revolving the campaign around the era of the Baba Nyonya’s colourful culture and the beauty of their jewellery.”
According to Meer, he has always been fascinated by the people who frequented his father’s jewellery shop – especially the elegant Peranakan ladies in their exquisite kebaya.
“They would never be seen without any of these accessories and they always made sure they were well and stylishly dressed for any occasion or even for a visit to the sundry shop,” he recalls.
“Even though a complete kebaya look is not considered mainstream fashion these days, we hope this Chinese New Year we are able rekindle some memories and revive this ethnic garment and the jewellery that accessories it.”
The Peranakan jewellery pieces shown here are from Habib’s heritage archives. Customers who are interested will be able to place customised orders with Habib for their very own Peranakan inspired jewellery pieces.
Habib is known to embrace and celebrate heritage and cultural diversity. The local brand has also always focused strongly on its Malaysian roots.
