Two Malaysian beauty brands are stepping up their game of getting their products seen and noticed. After doing well in 2018 with new ventures and pop ups, these are the local names to follow in 2019.

So.lek Cosmetics, which is sold online, has been appearing at pop-ups in Parkson, selected Guardian stores and Isetan KLCC. Founded by siblings Dahlia Nadirah and Luqman Hakim, So.lek offers quality cosmetics at affordable prices.

The name was inspired by two things – alat-solek (which means makeup) and the phrase “So? Relax!” (often used by the siblings).

In early 2018, Guardian approached So.lek with a proposal to have the brand in their stores. By November, they had installed So.lek displays at selected stores. This was something close to Dahlia’s heart, of having affordable cosmetics sold at pharmacies.

Following that, they launched their first full bay of So.lek Cosmetics at Play Up Advance, Berjaya Times Square (which is under Parkson Unlimited Beauty) in Kuala Lumpur. They also created their first LED screen to promote the brand to customers.

Over at Duck Cosmetics, collaborations were key in their efforts for brand awareness. Riding on the success of Crazy Rich Asians, Duck Cosmetics landed a coveted relationship with Warner Bros to launch a makeup line inspired by the movie.

The result was the Crazy Rich Asians Duck Cosmetic Beauty Chapter Set, for women to recreate looks inspired by the characters in the movie. Duck Cosmetics was co-founded by Malaysian entrepreneur Vivy Yusof. It’s the first local beauty brand to open a store at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur.

Created by Vivy as a beauty solution for the modern girl on the move, it’s her first venture into the beauty industry, following the successful launch of her Duck branding that encompasses four main lines from scarves, stationery and bags to home and living products.

In early 2018, Duck made its appearance at Sephora, Suria KLCC, with a purple-themed display. It also collaborated with Touch n Go over Hari Raya with a Duck-themed card.

Thanks to these these strategic moves, we’re excited to watch their next steps in 2019.
