Sharon Joanna, 48, Event Organiser And Emcee
Sharon has a slight tan skin tone and she currently wears the Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Foundation in Soft Tan, which helps make her skin look a lot less shiny and is a shade that suits her skin tone.
“Wearing a foundation is like putting on a second layer of skin on my face to cover up any imperfections and also to look natural.
Initially I had a problem in finding the right shade of foundation in the market. But, now it’s great that brands are offering a wider choice of foundation shades for different skin tones. This gives women more choices in picking the right shade and the confidence in finding one that truly fits them.
Unless I’m attending an event, I don’t really mix my foundations. When I do I just mix little a lighter foundation and concealer that will do the trick in helping me get a clearer and more even toned complexion.
I really hope beauty brands will come up with foundations that women can wear during outdoor activities, when swimming or sweating. I would like to see a good foundation that will not clog pores and is also safe to use for those with blemishes or troubled skin. Oh, and a foundation that breathes easily on the skin!”
Ummu Hurun Ain Mohd Kamal, 21, Fashion Retail Assistant
Ummu has a medium to tan skin tone and she currently wears the Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Foundation in Soft Tan that she says fits her skin tone best.
“Wearing a foundation helps to cover up my scars, uneven skin tone and on the overall it helps my skin look a lot better.
Due to my skin tone I had trouble finding the right foundation and it was a lot of trial and error in finding a foundation that fit me. I did some research from drugstores to high end brands to find one that is suitable.
I was happy and excited when I found out that my favourite brands were coming up with wider range of shades for every skin tone, so it cuts the hassle of having to shop around endlessly to find the perfect shade as one brand has got it all.
Some brands offer products that let you mix foundations to get the right shade but to be honest, it is difficult. Mixing and matching foundations just to get that perfect shade is definitely a no for me, especially when I’m always on the go and don’t have the luxury of time.
What I would like in a foundation is one that is lightweight, longlasting without having the need to set it, doesn’t need powdering up throughout the day, stays matte and at the same time, gives my skin that healthy glow!”
Rani Rajasekaran, 31, Freelance Writer
Rani has a dark skin tone and she currently wears Bobbi Brown Long Wearing Foundation in Warm Almond (6.5) and says that it’s the closest shade for her darker skin tone and helps to even out her complexion.
“For years I have had quite a bit of trouble finding the right foundation to suit my skin tone. After countless trials, I settled on Bobbi Brown Liquid Foundation. When I say settled, I’m still not convinced it is the right one for me unfortunately.
I have had makeup artists teach me how to apply foundation but each makeup artist has a different take and many have trouble finding the right shade for my skintone. And, so as a normal clueless woman looking for normal every day make up, I still feel just as lost as when I first started on this foundation searching journey!
I actually use foundation a few times a year so my solution is to accept my pigmentation and uneven skin tone and just dab a wee bit of foundation on to make my skin look a bit better.
Out of all the brands out there, Fenty Beauty has tried the hardest and even though there are gaps in this skin tone matches, they relate the closest to a broad spectrum of women’s different skin tones.
What I would like to see more of in the market are foundations for darker skin tones, a range that is specifically catered for Indians. So far, Nars, Bobbi Brown and Fenty Beauty are possibly the only ones which come the closest, but it would be great to have more choices at more affordable price points for darker skin tones.”
