When you have a stable of iconic timepieces, it always provides for inspiration in new pieces, and Montblanc came out with a new collection from its Star Legacy line inspired by the spirit of classical watchmaking. In this case, it’s the Minerva heritage which goes back to 1858.
Seen at the Salon International Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) in Geneva early this year, the timepieces retained key elements but with a more refined finishing. There were also exclusive limited editions of the patented Suspended Exo Tourbillon and a new interpretation of the iconic Nicolas Rieussec monopusher chronograph.
The collection also consists of 39 and 42mm automatic watches, 42mm moonphase and full-calendar timepieces, and 42-mm automatic chronographs. Here’s a closer look at the collection:
Montblanc Star Legacy Suspended Exo Tourbillon Limited Edition 58
The new patented Suspended Exo Tourbillon complication was developed entirely in-house by the master watchmakers at the Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret. It took three years of development and the idea was to create a more visible one-minute tourbillon.
The innovative, patented mechanical architecture of the Exo Tourbillon saves more energy than a conventional tourbillon as the cage is smaller in size and free of the weight of the balance wheel. It also weighs less than a conventional tourbillon.
Another key feature of the Exo Tourbillon is the speed of its rotations. The cage completes one full rotation per minute and the large balance wheel, beating at the traditional frequency of 18’000 oscillations per hour, has a diameter of 14.5 mm. This plays an important role in the performance of the timepiece.
The 44.8 mm case comes in 18K red gold and features a sapphire crystal on the case back which reveals the beauty of the hand – finished manually wound movement calibre MB M16.68. It also provides a totally transparent view of the Exo Tourbillon from the front to the back.
There is also a small plaque with the timepiece’s limited edition number on the dial that balances the Exo Tourbillon’s bridge construction. It is limited to 58 pieces, which is the year the Montblanc Manufacture was founded in Villeret in 1858.
A limited edition of 28 is also available with a case set with 54 baguette diamonds of 2.35 cts.
Montblanc Star Legacy Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph
For this timepiece, the case and dial have been redesigned. The new version sees the silvery-white dial reworked, to allow for better visibility. The off-centred hour-circle and the chronograph’s titanium turning discs have been domed giving a three-dimensional effect.
Inspired by the codes of the collection, the black Arabic numerals have been slimmed down and surrounded by a precise railway minute track. Classic blued leaf-shaped hands complete the overall design. The dial has an an elegant guilloché pattern in places and an azuré finishing in the centre of the hour-circle.
There is also a filet sauté guilloché decoration around the dial. It also pays tribute to the famous chronograph’s inventor with a ring with the Nicolas Rieussec inscription on the outer part of the dial. The 44.8 mm has been redesigned and is reminiscent of Minerva pocket watches.
The timepiece is powered by the Manufacture monopusher chronograph movement with automatic winding, the Calibre MB R200 and the 72 hours of power reserve has a second time zone displayed.
Montblanc Star Legacy Full Calendar
Elegant simplicity is found in this timepiece where the date is indicated by a hand with a little red crescent that sweeps along a wreath of thirty-one digits around the dial’s periphery. The day of the week and the month appear in apertures, while the lower half of the dial is reserved for the moon phase display.
The Montlanc Star Legacy Full Calendar comes in a 42 mm stainless steel case and is equipped with the automatic calibre MB 29.12.
Montblanc Star Legacy Automatic Chronograph
Elements of design include a silvery-white dial, redesigned black Arabic numerals, classic blued leaf-shaped hands, a refined filet sauté guilloché and a unique railway minute track that encircles the dial and counters. It comes equipped with the automatic movement calibre MB 25.02.
It has a 42 mm stainless steel case with curved horns and steps on the side. There is an onion-shaped crown with the Montblanc emblem, and a curved finish on the side of the case itself, which gives it a refined pebble effect.
Montblanc Star Legacy Moonphase
An ode to the moon coupled with classic fine watchmaking and timeless design make for a beautiful timepiece. The Montblanc Star Legacy Moonphase has a refined moon phase complication.
The lunar cycle lasts 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 3 seconds. One will able to see the current phase of the moon in the lunar cycle, indicating if it is a new, full, half or quarter moon.
It also highlights the illuminated portion of the moon, as it would be seen from Earth. It comes equipped with the automatic movement Calibre MB 29.14 and is housed in an 42 mm round stainless steel case.
The Montblanc Star Legacy Date Automatic
All the iconic design elements of the line are included – a refined dial featuring the Montblanc iconic exploding star guilloché pattern, leaf-shaped hour and minute hands and redesigned Arabic numerals reminiscence of the historical Minerva pocket watches.
There is also the filet sauté guilloché, a unique railway minute track and a second hand with the Montblanc emblem at its tip. It’s a difficult job having all the star DNA details in one watch!
It has the automatic movement Calibre MB 24.01, and the Montblanc Star Legacy Automatic Date features the hours, minutes and seconds in the centre and a date in an aperture at six o’clock.
The timepiece comes in a 39 mm or 42 mm size – with a choice of stainless steel, steel and gold, or 18K gold cases. The stainless steel and the steel-gold versions feature silvery-white dials, and one slate grey dial animation on 39 mm while the full 18k red gold versions come with an ivory dial.
