Fact: There are more A-list single mums than single dads. Another fact: Did you know that some of your favourite celebs are single dads?
Hollywood’s single dads’ club is small, but judging by the star power of the dads in it, membership is exclusive. While they may stride down the red carpet in dapper suits, and swashbuckle across the silver screen in deeds of derring-do, when the tinsel dust settles, they’re just plain ol’ dads.
The hunky Irish actor is a single dad to sons James, 13, and Henry, six. The legendary Lothario has toned down his ways to focus on parenting his boys. Once linked to everyone from Britney Spears to Liz Taylor, paparazzi is more likely now to catch him out and about with his sons.
In 2015, he told OK! magazine that he’s “a loving father who takes his responsibility very seriously, and I am completely devoted to giving my sons the best life possible”.
The veteran actor is arguably the best thespian of his generation. He’s best known to audiences as Michael Corleone in The Godfather. When he’s not tending to his trophy case of awards, he’s home with his three kids: Julie Marie, 26, and twins Oliva Rose and Anton James, 15.
Last year, he told Vanity Fair that he “would rather work less”, because he “has young children” that he’d “like to be more involved with”.
The Mission Impossible star is a single father to three kids: adopted children Isabella, 23, and Connor 21, and to youngest Suri, 10. While he’s taken on a host of roles in his life, he says his most important (by far) is being a dad. He told Esquire magazine that he’ll “never forget the moment [he] became a dad”, including the “clarity” he felt and “the level of responsibility, the desire to give such joy”.
Our favourite contender for James Bond is dad to daughter Isan, 14, and son Winston, two. Given Elba’s rocky romantic life, no one (including Elba, we’ll wager) is quite sure whether he’s in or out of a relationship. But you can’t doubt his commitment to his kids. He told Cosmpolitan magazine that “[he] loves being a dad, it’s an important part of [his] life”. He added that “children don’t raise themselves”, and that “you’ve got to be there to guide them and help them through it”.
When Liam Neeson lost his wife Natasha Richardson in 2009, he had to shoulder the responsibilities of being a single dad. The Northern Irish actor, who made a late-in-life resurgence as an action hero, more than rose to the occasion. He is dad to sons Micheál, 20, and Daniel, 19. He told the Daily Mail about the joys (and worries) of fatherhood: “It’s an ongoing joy being a dad. It’s always a joy but it’s a joyful worry.”
