The perfect home is the sum of all its parts, and one crucial yet often overlooked part is the ceiling fan. With our hot and humid Malaysian weather, it is not an understatement to say that it is indeed an important, albeit material, member of the family.

Picking the right fan, however, can be a daunting task, but it is one that the experts at KDK are more than happy to help with. These are some of the questions one ought to ask before purchasing a new ceiling fan:

What is the first thing to consider when picking a ceiling fan and how does size factor in?

First off, decide on your needs and the type of controls you would like to have. Also, determine the size of the room you want to place the ceiling fan in. You need to account for one metre between the fan blade and the wall.

As an example, a 150cm ceiling fan should fit a room size of at least 350 x 350cm. Secondly, determine the height of the ceiling. There should be at least 2.3m and above of height in the room.

How do you choose the right fan for the right space, aesthetic wise?

KDK ceiling fans come in a number of colours, from white to grey and dark brown, to silver and bronze. That is why they are suitable for all spaces and concepts. The designs are also modern and minimalistic, with long or short form blades.

KDK has also developed an app (for Android and IOS), in which you can play with the Place A Fan function by simply uploading a picture of your home and positioning the fan in it, to get an idea of how it will look like to help you choose the ideal fan.

What are the important things you need to know before making the purchase?

Your budget is very important. If you are working with a low budget, a good option is a ceiling fan with a regulator, which is available from around RM120 to RM180. If you would rather pick one with a remote control, you will need to set aside RM250 to RM500.

However, if you want to go luxe, consider the direct current (DC) series fans K18NY, K14ZW, K15UW, K15Z5, and K15YX, as DC motors are known for better electricity savings, good for the earth and a smart investment in every sense.

Do the materials and size of a fan influence the ambience in a room?

If you have a small room, a short-bladed fan is better because it leaves enough room to channel air downwards. A large diameter fan in a small room will not channel the air downwards, due to limited space. In terms of materials, there is nothing to worry about, as the fans are designed for Malaysian weather.

Customers often ask about the difference between three, four, and five bladed fans. Here is how they are different – three bladed fans give off choppy air, while five bladed fans provide soft and natural air.

In terms of the wind generated, all options give off the same amount of wind; however, while the former generates strong and focused gusts, the latter allows you to feel calm and at peace. It all depends on what you need.

Give us some tips for cleaning, maintenance and for making use of green technology.

All ceiling fans are designed with energy efficiency technology, so you do not need to worry about high electricity costs. Our fans come with five-star energy ratings from the Energy Board, so they are certified sustainable and green.

In order to ensure smooth and clean air quality, you need to make sure your fan is clean. Wipe them down with clean water – no detergent needed – and be careful not to bend them by accident.

For maintenance purposes, you will want to ensure the main electricity switch is turned off and let the fan rest if it has been in use. At the first sign of noise or trouble, call KDK’s customer service centre at 03-7785 5011 or make a report at www.kdk.com.my/customer-service request form.
