The importance of personal branding – how people judge us based on our “perceived value” – cannot be underscored. So says Steve Wee, the founder of branding agency Brand Yourself and co-founder of the School Of Charisma.
He says creating a strong personal brand can build opportunities in our career and business. “Personal branding is important because it creates a high perceived value. People tend to buy people first before they buy into a product. That’s why it’s important that personal branding complements corporate branding.”
Brand Yourself was set-up in 2011. Wee’s goal was to empower his clients with the knowledge and tools to build their own online and offline branding. In 2013, he started the School Of Charisma with Datin Winnie Loo and Angel Wong Chui Ling, a training centre for personal branding, etiquette and communications.
Wee will be a guest speaker at the personal branding workshop How To Convert Your Network Into Net Worth at Menara Star (Phileo Damansara, Jalan 16/11, Seksyen 16, 46350 Petaling Jaya) on Jan 24. The event is organised by Star Media Group under the Star Empowerment Series.
The one-day workshop is open to everyone, especially career professionals and aspiring entrepreneurs keen on learning how to brand themselves. Workshop participants will learn how to create and define their brand identity, and use personal branding to their advantage.
“It boils down to building good relationships,” says Wee. “It’s about building trust which you can leverage on. You may know a person but without establishing a relationship with them, it will be hard to convert them to your net worth.”
“Before branding yourself, you need to be clear on what’s preventing you from moving forward,” he adds. “You must have a benchmark of where you want to go before you can strategise to achieve your goals.”
Wee says it’s important to master “people skills” in order to brand yourself. So the core lessons of the workshop include networking, communication, online and personal branding. He describes these skills as “easy yet difficult”.
“Most people learn these skills on their own, but without guidance from the experts, you may not know what you are doing is right or wrong,” Wee concludes.
