The inaugural Star Supa Comic event, which takes place at the Mid Valley Exhibition Centre in Kuala Lumpur on Dec 29 and 30, is set to be an epic cosplay weekend to end the year.
There will be a wide array of anime, manga and comics cosplayers taking part in this gathering of tribes.
One unique performer is Luna Lorrain and there are two things the 23-year-old is passionate about – violins and anime.
She picked up the stringed instrument at the age of 11 and has never looked back. After all, with her mother as her piano teacher, it was just a matter of time before music became a staple in her life.
She went on to take up an undergraduate degree in music performances in Trinity College London and in 2014, became a member of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra.
At the same time, when she was growing up, she was hooked on anime (Japanese animation). And as fate would have it, one of her mother’s students suggested that she try dressing up as her favourite anime character.
Enter the world of cosplaying.
“This was the beginning of a new hobby for me! I decided to give it a go at my first event – Comic Fiesta in KL. That opened my eyes to the world of cosplay,” recalls Luna.
“Cosplaying allows me to bring my favourite anime characters to life.”
Some of her favourite characters include Mikasa Ackerman (Attack On Titan), Ciel Phantomhive (Black Butler) and Hinamori Amy (Shugo Chara).
“I relate to their personality traits, which are a mix of cool and sweet,” explains Luna, who has cosplayed over 20 anime characters.
But her cosplay story doesn’t end there. In 2009, Luna attended her very first anime, comic and gaming (ACG) convention, Comic Fiesta, and she had her very own aha moment.
She knew – there and then – that she wanted to perform her favourite anime songs at ACG conventions.
Her journey as an ACG performer began in 2016. And how she has enjoyed her time on stage.
She was a featured performer at a Cosplay Corner event in 2016, and in that same year, she performed at the video game Pokemon Sun And Moon official launch.
If she had to narrow down her anime songbook, Luna says her favourite songs would be Driven By The Stars (Monster Hunter World), Hikari and Dear Beloved (Kingdom Hearts) and most of the Final Fantasy soundtracks.
She cites Nobuo Uematsu and Akihito Narita, both well known Japanese video game composers, as the main reason she loves to perform.
“I’ve grown to love their music compositions. To me, they’re the best in the business when it comes to producing beautiful songs and instrumentals that can capture any moment,” she reveals.
Luna is not showing any signs of slowing down. Last year, she performed at the Anime On Ice Festival, Cosmart and made her AniManGaki (an annual ACG event for fans, by fans) debut. She has also appeared at every Anime Saiko event to date and this year, performed at the first-ever Asia Comic Con Malaysia.
The upcoming Star Supa Comic event is set to be another exciting weekend out for her. Luna is truly one to look out for.
