Malaysia has had a busy cosplay scene going on for a while now, beginning way back in the early 2000s with small gatherings organised by enthusiastic college students.
The early days saw people – mostly teens – dress up as their favourite characters from Japanese manga books and anime TV series. As anime grew in popularity and more Japanese TV began to be aired locally, cosplay grew in tandem, and professionally organised events soon became the norm. The Malaysia Cosplay Club launched in 2003 and was followed by other groups; cosplay was no longer just a teen thing, either, as young adults and even older folk became fans of this “dress-up for grownups” trend.
In fact, there are now professional cosplayers – yes, you can make a living at dressing up – such as Japanese cosplayer Lulu Hashimoto, known as a “living doll” and the latest trend in Tokyo’s fashion modelling scene, or international cosplay star Ben Bergmann who often plays characters from games.
Events, too, have been growing for a decade now, with each year seeing bigger gatherings in the thousands. The latest on the scene is Star Supa Comic, set to offer something for anyone interested in anime, cosplay, e-games and omocha (toys). Taking place on Dec 29 and 30 at the Mid Valley Exhibition Centre, Supa Comic will be a platform for all cosplayers, anime and manga lovers, gamers, doujinshi (independent comics publishers) and collectors to showcase their talents and win attractive prizes.
There are many, many ways in which you can win prizes by taking part in the many contests ranging from Best Cosplay Competition, Doujin Contest, Mobile Legends, and Collectors Card Game. If competition is not your thing, chill out and check out the more than 1,000 exclusive anime merchandise pieces that will be on show.
You need tickets to get in: Early Bird tickets are priced at RM25 (one-day pass), and RM45 (two-day pass); walk-in tickets are RM30 (for one day) and RM60 for two days.
