Home is where every individual seeks comfort and protection, and any Vasthu Sastra defects in the property can work adversely on all occupants.

Many people seek answers for why they face woes in regard to health, prosperity, peace of mind and happiness. The ancient science of architecture will be able to reveal the effects of several major Vasthu flaws found in a house.

I am devoting this column to highlighting the impact of faults in some key areas on the owner and dwellers of such troubled properties.

Plot shape: If you are residing on land that is irregular in shape and is cut on the sides, the energy flow will be altered, and this may lead to enmity, poor health, financial issues, mental instability and weak relationships.

Plots with voids in the north-east, south-west, south-east or north-west are unfavourable.

Such imperfections are normally found in houses in corner lots. Effort should be made to acquire the missing portion or resize the land to make it a perfect rectangle or square.

Elevated and depressed land: Some owners look for land that is raised to enjoy a majestic view of the housing scheme. Such an intention is fine but you need to know which section of the land is elevated or depressed because it can affect the energy flow into the plot.

Land that is higher in the south and west quadrants are favourable, but not in the north and east quadrants, which should be lower. Having a raised north, east and north-east will block the smooth flow of subtle energy, thus upsetting the well-being of the dwellers.

A flat-surfaced land that is one level is encouraged because it will allow even distribution of energy.

A rectangular or square-shaped land is favourable.

Roads: Survey the housing site plan and visit the surroundings to identify where the roads are located because nothing can be done if the lanes are situated inauspiciously after the purchase.

Completely avoid properties where roads are spearing into the house like a T-junction or Y-junction, which will bring ill health and misery to the occupants.

Streets on the four sides of a house, three sides or two sides are fine.

Also, do not buy a property where the road is higher than the house because such a shortcoming will be almost impossible to correct.

House structure: The physical structure of most ready-made houses is a perfect rectangle or square, which is fine.

However, owners are inclined to do renovations and extend the building unevenly, such as a protruding kitchen, yard or living room. Such annexes disturb the energy flow into the property, thus preventing the occupants from enjoying a balanced body, mind and spirit.

When an extension of the kitchen is done in a double-storey terraced house, for instance, ideally both the ground and top floor should be extended to the same length to ensure unfluctuating energy flow and orientation.

Staircase: The location of the stairway is vital in a property because if it is placed in the south-west (wealth quadrant) or north-east (spiritual quadrant), it will involve major renovation works to relocate it to favourable quadrants such as the north-west, south-east, north, east, south or west.

The staircase must not be positioned in these two locations or in the centre of the house as it will give rise to all sorts of problems to the occupants.

Also, the staircase should turn clockwise and have an odd number of steps.

Basement: The entry to the basement and its location should be in the east and north-east and nowhere else in the property.

This is because the northern and eastern quadrants must be lighter than the southern and western sides of the plot.

Also, there must not be a depression in the southern and western quadrants of the land.

Toilet and bath: The toilet and bath must not be placed in the north-east and south-west of a property.

If they are, they must be moved to the north, south, east, west, north-west or south-east.

All the above structural flaws must not be ignored when selecting a property because they are regarded as fundamental values in Vasthu which focuses on promoting peace, happiness, good health and prosperity.

Other Vasthu errors found in the house interior, like an improperly designated kitchen, bedroom and prayer room can be easily remedied by rearranging the facilities.

However, this may not be the same for major structural defects found in a house, particularly in the exterior.
