Barbie has undergone a historic makeover, with toy maker Mattel releasing the world’s most famous doll in three new body types – tall, petite and curvy.
It’s a move that Time magazine calls a reflection of the US’ changing beauty ideals in an exclusive cover story published on the same day of the collection’s online release.
“… the curvaceous bodies of Kim Kardashian West, Beyonce and Christina Hendricks have become iconic, while millennial feminist leaders like Lena Dunham are deliberately baring their un-Barbie-like figures onscreen, fueling a movement that promotes body acceptance,” Time writes.
The article also points out that the range is aimed at reviving flagging sales by trying to appeal to its broader, more diverse audience.
The 2016 Barbie Fashionista Dolls will be released throughout the year and represent seven skin tones, 22 eye colours and 24 hairstyles in total.
It’s the latest move in the toy industry that seeks to address diversity.
In response to the social media movement #ToyLikeMe and an online petition asking Lego to positively represent children with disabilities, the toy maker has created its first official miniature figure of a boy in a wheelchair.
Meanwhile, the new Barbie dolls are now available to order online at Barbie.com and will be delivered in February.
The dolls make their official debut at the New York Toy Fair beginning Feb 13 and retail for US$9.99 (RM43). – AFP Relaxnews
