Step into coffee heaven at the new Nespresso boutique at The Gardens Mall, Mid Valley City in Kuala Lumpur. Outside, the smile of Oscar-winning actor George Clooney greets you as you approach, inviting you to step into the shop, the first of its kind in Malaysia.
A unique and brand-expansive concept launched in Cannes, France, the boutique is being rolled out worldwide to encourage coffee drinkers to immerse themselves in the ultimate experience as they delve deep into coffee exploration.
Throughout the boutique, visitors can experience elements that reflect the Nespresso’s commitment to sustainability and adherence to a circular economy. Restorative by nature, the brand also works to minimise waste through careful design.
Geoffrey Dalziel, Nespresso Malaysia’s business development manager, explained how the boutique concept revolves around five key principles:
“A simplified and holistic customer journey through carefully sequenced areas, a celebration of coffee moments with bespoke coffee rituals, new architectural codes for a warm and cosy yet premium atmosphere, a sustainability statement to nourish the Nespresso ambition to become the highest quality and the most sustainable coffee brand in the world and finally, a seamless physical-to-digital ecosystem to connect mobile sales with retail destination.”
He added, “By combining all of these elements, the retail experience becomes fully immersive with consumers all over the world able to discover the Nespresso coffee world in a new enhanced way. This concept has also been the opportunity to transform our employees into highly empowered brand ambassadors, thanks to the combination of people skills, expertise, new roles and processes and cutting edge operational technology.”
Nespresso’s goal is to achieve a network of 100% environmentally-friendly boutiques by 2020, which they say will be possible because of a certified protocol that measures carbon footprint reduction for each new outlet.
The brand shows it’s commitment to the concept through elements like tabletops made from used coffee grounds (from the Nespresso factory in Switzerland) to utilising wood sourced from reforestation programmes.
Throughout the store, guests can discover tasteful details that celebrate coffee and its origin. Everything from the muted colour palette of rich coffee browns and crema-inspired golds to the floor tiles and lamps (a tribute to those used on coffee farms) has been designed to link back to coffee.
The boutique also features some greenery – spaces embedded with coffee plants, bushes, and shade trees to mimic coffee plantations that are part of the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality Programme.
Meanwhile, guests are encouraged to explore coffee tasting rituals through a “sensorial welcome” by specialists who will introduce them to the vast range of coffees. Guests can get a hands-on experience with the coffee grounds inside a capsule, discovering the aromas before having a taste experience.
There’s also the bar, where guests can check out the easy-to-use machines and accompanying accessories. They will be assisted in exploring the coffee ranges, including tasting two coffees side-by-side to better understand their taste preferences and the full range of 24 coffee variants.
The new Nespresso boutique concept was designed by award-winning architecture and interior design practice, Universal Design Studio, founded by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby.
