Kedai Kopi Seng Hing is a coffeeshop that has been around at the same place in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah for as long as I can remember. And there’s a reason for it.
Actually, several reasons. The first is the shop’s famous Tuaran Mee (see image above) – a dish of fried egg noodles that’s popular in KK (in the town of Tuaran itself, though, it is simply called “mee goreng” which is fried noodles). What makes the Tuaran Mee special at Seng Hing is the addition of “lihing” or local rice wine. That and the fact that a plate of noodles may come packed with a generous serving of pork, roast pork, char siu, chun ken (egg rolls), lap cheong and whatever else you want, and the price would still be the same.
So far, I have not come across any other shop in KK that adds lihing to their Tuaran Mee. But then again, I don’t always go back to my hometown so I might have missed some hidden treasures.
Another specialty at Seng Hing is its Tom Yum Meehoon. Spicy and tangy, this soupy dish is so flavourful you just can’t resist ordering one for yourself when you see a bowl of it on someone else’s table! The noodles come with a handful of fresh prawns and bean sprouts, but really, it is the hot, creamy soup that gets you hooked on it.
Apart from that, Seng Hing is also known for its Sarawak laksa, but I didn’t think it was all that as I know a couple of other shops and stalls that serve better laksa. The dish at Seng Hing is very creamy and served with prawns, shredded chicken meat and eggs. Remember to squeeze in the limau kasturi before digging in!
Food prices at Seng Hing have changed over the years for obvious reasons but when we went recently we ordered four noodle dishes and four drinks and the bill came up to RM42. That’s cheap by today’s standards!
Seng Hing also sub-lets its shop to a couple of stalls selling other food items like Mongolian chicken rice and fried noodles. The shop opens early, but it also fills up fast with folks who work in the area and tourists who stay in the hotels nearby.
