I have been a fan of this restaurant even before it was relocated from Section 17, Petaling Jaya. While we can get nasi lemak around the clock and virtually anywhere in the country, this place has something most restaurants don’t – pork rendang.
Who knew that a simple side could elevate this Malaysian favourite, not to mention, my spirits?
6 to 10 serves a mean variety of Western fare but I always go for the nasi lemak and two curry side dishes (RM13.50) and a big glass of fresh apple juice (RM6.90). I ordered my usual sides of pork rendang and mutton curry.
The ambiance at the Aman Suria restaurant is more comfortable compared to its previous location. The outside sitting area is spacious and casual while the inside is cosy and comfortable.
My nasi lemak came hot with the fragrant smell of coconut milk wafting from the rice. Sitting pretty next to it were generous portions of dry pork rendang and big chunks of mutton in a shallow pool of curry gravy. Also on my plate were condiments and garnishes you’d expect from a plate of nasi lemak – a small heap of sambal ikan bilis, a scattering of peanuts and fried anchovies, half a hard-boiled egg, and little sticks of cucumbers.
While the lean mutton was a touch on the tough side, the curry added the distinct aroma of the meat to the rice. The main attraction, at least for me, was the pork rendang. The meat was shredded to allow a full infusion of the spicy dry curry. A spoonful of the rendang followed by a mouthful of rice is my preferred way of eating.
The nasi lemak also has an option of three side curry dishes, but take it from me, you are not going to have enough rice for it all – my advice is to keep it to two curries.
I finished my meal faster than I realised. I sucked on my twin straws to drain the last of my apple juice. A burp soon followed, an indicator of a nice meal had.
Reinventing or re-interpreting a local delicacy is a great way to keep a classic dish exciting, and as I wiped my sambal-stained mouth with a piece of tissue, I prayed that there were people out there who are doing just that.
