What do you love most about your parents or grandparents?
In conjunction with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), Universiti Malaya’s Julius Centre and the Prevent Elder Abuse and Neglect Initiative are inviting the public to send in photographs and/or videos that celebrate the elderly in their lives.
Submissions must be based on this year’s WEAAD theme, “Remember Me”, and capture the essence of what makes your parents, grandparents, granduncles, grandaunts, or any elderly who has had an impact on your life, so important.
“We want to highlight the importance of bridging the gap between the young and the old,” says Dr Fadzilah Hanum Mohd Mydin, who is organising the WEAAD programme.
“In this competition, we want the younger generation to remember their elders and share memories spent with them. The submissions should include themes such as appreciating our elders and valuing their experience. It should portray ageing in a positive way.”
Dr Fadzilah and her UM colleagues are part of the Prevent Elder Abuse And Neglect Initiative (Peace), a study that looks at elder abuse in Malaysia and ways to eliminate abuse and neglect among the elderly.
The photo competition is open to everyone. Just snap a picture with your elder, share the image on social media, and caption it according to the theme. Remember to add #RememberMe in your status. The contest ends June 21 and the top three photos will get RM500, RM300 and RM200 respectively.
“Since it is Hari Raya, there will be lots of happy times with family and many opportunities to capture these moments with our loved elders,” said Dr Fadzilah.
Meanwhile, the video segment is only for university students. Videos must be in English – Bahasa Malaysia is accepted but must come with English subtitles – and cannot be longer than three minutes.
All videos must be in the AVI format and submitted to the Julius Centre of Universiti Malaya at the Faculty of Medicine by June 18. The top three videos will receive RM800, RM500 and RM300 respectively.
