Filmmaker Datuk Yusof Haslam revealed that his son – 23-year-old director Syafiq Yusof – was offered to direct Polis Evo. However, Syafiq turned it down due to scheduling conflicts. Ghaz Abu Bakar eventually took on directorial duties.

The movie starring Zizan Razak and Shaheizy Sam became the highest-grossing Malaysian movie, earning almost RM18mil at the box office.

Saya rasa menyesal pun ada (I do have some regrets),” said Yusof during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur, recently.

On the other hand, Syafiq said he has no regrets: “I really enjoyed Polis Evo and I think Ghaz did a great job with the movie. I was really inspired that I’m going to use that movie as a motivation to raise the standards of my own work. Specifically Abang Long Fadil 2.”

Abang Long Fadil 2 is the sequel to the successful KL Gangster spin-off Abang Long Fadil, released last year. In the first movie, Zizan plays a wannabe gang member who tries to make it on his own after his friend was sent to prison. He then inadvertently gets involved in a feud involving two ruthless clans.

For the upcoming sequel, Zizan reprises his role as Fadil and this time he gets mistaken for an assassin. He has to clear his name before he gets arrested for a series of murders.

“Of course, I have no qualms about taking on the role again. I’ve spent so much time researching to create this character of Fadil. I’d be stupid to turn it down,” Zizan said.

He also shared that he has started working out to prepare for the movie’s fight scenes and stunts.

The movie stars A. Galak and social media personality Wak Doyok as a mafia father-son duo.

Yusof, who is also the producer for Abang Long Fadil 2, explained how the casting came to be: “I remember the first time I met Wak Doyok, I told him I want to put him in a movie as A. Galak’s son because they look alike!

“I think fans are in for a treat as they get to see A. Galak play a villain for the first time since Bayangan Maut in 1991.”

The veteran actor is well-known for playing Sergeant Hashim in the long-running series Gerak Khas.

Syafiq also cleared the air on rumours that Kamal Adli – who was one of the main actors in the first movie – had to be dropped from Abang Long Fadil 2 due to a feud with Zizan.

“Nobody from the first movie is returning except for Zizan. I don’t want to repeat myself. For Abang Long Fadil 2, I have planned for Zizan’s character to go on an entirely new journey and meet different people. This sequel has no links with events from the previous movie.”

Shooting began in KL on Nov 15 and is expected to wrap in 50 days. The movie is set for release in 2016.

Abang Long Fadil featured an appearance by Bumblebee the Autobot and Iron Man in CGI form during a scene where Fadil was daydreaming.

For the use of CGI in the sequel, Syafiq said he wanted better quality this time around.

“We’re going to improve on the quality of the CGI and make sure it’s relevant to the storyline.”

Slick seems to be the keyword as he also cited Hollywood movie Kingsman: The Secret Service as one of the many inspirations for the movie.

“We have bigger and bolder action sequences planned for the movie.”

With a production budget of RM3.2mil, the sky’s the limit for Syafiq.
