Will the next Disney Princess be Malaysian? When Disney revealed the title and concept art of the upcoming Raya & The Last Dragon at the recent D23, our first thought was that it looked like it is set in South-East Asia.
Well, according to its producers, the movie is inspired by South-East Asia. And while we still don’t know if the titular Raya will be Malaysian, the movie does have a strong Malaysian connection – it is written by our very own Adele Lim!
In October 2018, it was reported that Lim, who co-wrote the smash hit Crazy Rich Asians, was working on a then-untitled Disney film. On Aug 25, Lim took to the stage at D23, together with producer Osnat Shurer (who produced Moana) and the film’s actors Cassandra Steele and Awkwafina, to announce the project.
“We’ve been keeping it under wraps for so long I think my family thought I was lying when I said I was working for a Disney feature animation!” Lim said in an interview with StageRightSecrets at D23.

Raya & The Last Dragon is set in the fictional land of Kumandra, which Shurer says is in “a reimagined Earth inhabited by an ancient civilisation that venerated the mythical dragons for their power and their wisdom.”
Steele voices Raya, a warrior who hopes to save her world by finding the last dragon Sisu (voiced by Awkwafina). The film is set to open November 2020.
