“We’ve passed on all we know. A thousand generations live in you now. But this is your fight.”
And so the brand new teaser trailer to Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker begins, with Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker’s solemn speech to Rey (Daisy Ridley).
As the final chapter of this trilogy and also the end of the Skywalker Saga, this promises to be a bittersweet end to this particular chapter of the franchise. (Disney also recently announced that the movie franchise will be taking a hiatus after this in order to focus more on TV shows).
Will this be the movie where Rey truly comes into her own? Just as the previous trilogies saw Luke Skywalker claim the title of Jedi Master and Anakin Skywalker ascend to become Darth Vader, will this be the movie that sees Rey finally fulfilled her potential?
She’s certainly grown more powerful, as we can see from the way she faces down Kylo Ren’s TIE Fighter with just her lightsaber.
The trailer also sees the welcome return of Lando Calrissian – after all, the Millennium Falcon isn’t going to captain itself. There’s also the wreckage of the Death Star, and… is that the evil cackle of Emperor Palpatine at the end of the trailer?
We have so many questions after watching this. Does the ‘Skywalker’ in the title refer to Rey’s linage? Or will Adam Driver’s Ben Skywalker be the main focus of the movie this time (he is seen repairing his Kylo Ren mask here)?
With J.J. Abrams at the helm once more after replacing Rian Johnson, director of the hugely divisive The Last Jedi, all bets are off.
“Every generation has a legend” the trailer proclaims, and either Kylo Ren or Rey is set to be the one for this generation. Or maybe it could be BB-8. Who knows?
