Singer Ernie Zakri is known for her powerful voice. In Ku Bersuara, she uses it in a powerful way.
The latest single sees the 26-year-old singing about being used and tricked by her lover, who promised her the world. As she launches into the chorus, Ernie decides she will stay silent no more.
The singer says she talked about the idea of the song to songwriters Syamel, Omar K, Blaine Bakri and John Jeevasingham, who then brought it to life. “The idea of the song is about women who have been bullied or discriminated in any way and they want to fight back because they can’t stand it anymore,” she tells StarLifestyle.
In its music video, she paints a gripping narrative of a woman who has been physically abused and finally finds her strength to expose her abuser. “I wanted to do a song with a positive message, a song that empowers women. I feel like there aren’t many songs around that touches on issues like abuse.”
She believes the song can speak to listeners in different ways. For Ernie herself, it reminds her of the time she felt discriminated as a singer.
Ernie’s foray into showbiz began in 2009 when she won singing competition Bintang RTM. For eight years, Ernie couldn’t quite break into the music industry. She only received her big break in 2017 when she won a duet singing competition, Duo Star, with Syamel.
Listeners have responded positively to Ku Bersuara, which dropped last December. “A lot of people have given me their feedback, saying the song has been a source of encouragement for them when they feel down.
“Some also shared they’ve felt inspired to fight back when they were bullied.
“This International Women’s Day, I’d like to tell all women out there that they are strong. Don’t be afraid to be yourself, don’t be afraid to say no and don’t be afraid to speak your mind.”
