K-pop girl group BlackPink performed to a sold out crowd over the weekend at the Malawati Indoor Stadium in Shah Alam and Blinks certainly wanted them to Stay.
It was BlackPink’s first time in Malaysia, but just like its song See You Later, fans definitely want to see more of the four members.
According to concert organiser MacpiePro, tickets for both shows (8,000 each day) were all snapped up. Initially, the BlackPink 2019 World Tour with KIA (In Your Area)’s stop at Kuala Lumpur was supposed to be just one night only, but organisers added an extra show due to overwhelming response.
Clad in bedazzled pink outfits, the four members – Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa and Rose – kickstarted the show with chart-topper Ddu-Du Ddu-Du.
The video for this song is the most-viewed music video in 24 hours on YouTube and, in January, it also became the most-viewed music video by a K-pop group on the website with 650 million views.
It had everyone in the stadium singing along to its infectious tunes such as See You Later, Forever Young and Whistle. BlackPink kept the momentum going with Boombayah, which features the line “in your area”, which is tagged on to the group world tour’s title.
Blackpink then turned up the heat with its popular song Playing With Fire, by using pyrotechnics to accentuate its dance routine for the number. It also performed Kiss And Make Up, a song the group collaborated with British pop singer Dua Lipa.
It must be said that the four of them certainly know how to charm its fans, known as Blinks. The interactions amongst the members throughout the show also had the audience going “aww, how cute”.
The South Korean girl group under YG Entertainment debuted on Aug 8, 2016, with its single album Square One. Currently it is the highest-charting female K-pop act on both Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard 200. It is also the first and only K-pop girl group to enter and top Billboard’s Emerging Artists chart.
Despite having less than 10 original songs, it managed to pad up the almost two-hour concert with covers and solo performances and a video featuring fans from all over the world.
Even when the commercial of the 2019 KIA Stinger featuring the girls was shown during intermission, fans screamed whenever the shot panned to any of the members. So you could certainly imagine how the crowd reacted when the girls were actually on the stage, in the flesh.
Aside from Blackpink’s songs, the girls also performed several covers such as K-Pop girl group Wonder Girls’ hit So Hot.
During the solo performances, Rose, the main vocalist, performed The Beatles’ Let It Be, Park Bom’s You And I and Big Bang member Tae-yang’s Only Look At Me; Jisoo did a Korean version of Zedd’s Clarity, Jennie sang her own debut song Solo, while Lisa, known as the best dancer of the group, flaunted her dance skills.
As the girls sang As If It’s Your Last, fans hoped it wouldn’t be the last they see of them. Blackpink did not disappoint as it came out to repeat Ddu Du Ddu Du and Stay for its encore. With the KL concerts wrapped up, the quartet heads to Taipei, Taiwan, to perform there on March 3.
KIA Motors, the second largest automobile manufacturer in South Korea, is the worldwide sponsor for the Blackpink 2019 World Tour.
