News has circulated on the Internet that George Clooney and his wife Amal Alamuddin are candidates for godparents to Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’s first baby. So when we met Clooney in Pasadena, California, at a press conference for his new TV show Catch-22, we had to ask if the reports were true.
“Apparently I’m going to be the godfather of the royals? No, no. I’m now a father of twins. I have enough s**t to deal with. Literally,” he said, laughing off the rumour. Clooney, 57, and Amal, 41, welcomed daughter Ella and son Alexander in June 2017.
Meghan, 37, has been in the news again after her estranged father Thomas Markle shared an excerpt of a letter she wrote him three months after her wedding in May 2018. In it, she told him to “stop lying and creating so much pain” and that his actions of talking to the media have hurt her.
“So the week of the wedding to hear about you having a heart attack through a tabloid was horrifying. I called and texted … I begged you to accept help — we sent someone to your home … and instead of speaking to me to accept this or any help, you stopped answering your phone and chose to only speak to tabloids,” read the letter, published by British tabloid Daily Mail.
Clooney expressed his disappointment that the tabloids are hounding Meghan, a familiar pattern according to the Oscar-winning actor, director and producer.
“They are just chasing Meghan. She is pursued and vilified the same way (Princess) Diana was and it’s history repeating itself, and we have seen how that ends,” Clooney told us on Monday (Feb 11), referring to the car crash that killed Prince Harry’s mother in 1997 after she was chased by the paparazzi.
“(Meghan) is seven months pregnant. I can’t tell you how frustrating it is to see that – taking a letter from a daughter to a father and broadcasting it. She’s getting a raw deal. It’s irresponsible,” he added.
Clooney and Amal were guests at Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding ceremony at Windsor Castle, along with Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland, while Thomas Markle was a no-show. Markle and Ragland divorced in 1987.
Catch-22 is Clooney’s return to scripted television after leaving the cast of the critically-acclaimed Emmy-winning medical drama ER in 1998. He spent five seasons in the lead role of Dr Doug Ross. He returned for a guest stint in 2009.
Clooney now co-produces, co-directs and stars in Catch-22, set to premiere on HBO in May.
The six-episode limited series is a satirical dark comedy set in WWII, based on the acclaimed 1961 novel by Joseph Heller. It also stars Kyle Chandler, Hugh Laurie and Christopher Abbott.
