Alien Huang makes hip-hop dancing look effortless in the local dance movie Who Is The Champion?, but the Taiwanese singer-actor says it could not be further than the truth.
In the movie, Huang plays teenager Han who loves dancing and aspires to compete on an international stage. Unfortunately, his father (Eric Chen) is a gambling addict so he is forced to give up on his dream to work several jobs in order to help repay his old man’s mounting debts.
Huang, who turned 35 last month, said he even surprised himself when he accepted the role in a dance-themed movie.
“I like how complex the character is, being caught in the dilemma between aspiration and obligation, and his struggles to make the right choice,” said Huang who is best known for hosting the popular Taiwanese variety show 100% Entertainment, with pop star Show Luo from 2006 to 2016.
“The tough part was that my role required me to be a whiz at dancing. And since I am not really that much of a dancer, it was a major challenge for me.
“Having to learn and memorise the dance choreography for six to seven songs in a very limited period of time was really taxing,” shared the Mandopop star singer who injured his back from too much training.
But that didn’t deter him. In fact, it made him work harder.
“I would spend the whole day just dancing in order to squeeze in as much training as possible. I poured all my effort into training until the dance moves came naturally to me the moment the music started playing,” said Huang who spent at least eight hours in dance training daily.
Huang was joined by the film’s writer-director John Lee as well as fellow co-stars Bella Cheng, Jasmine Lee, Rex Chua, Eric Lay, and Deric Ong at a recent press conference to launch the movie here.
Who is The Champion? is the first movie by Malaysian director Lee, who also wrote the script.
Although Huang did not have much confidence in his dancing skills, Lee – who also used to be a dancer and TV host – thought otherwise.
“I recall that my first TV interview was with Alien, and he mentioned that dancing was not his forte. However, he kept practising to prove to himself that he could do it. I really admire his determination very much.
“So, when I wrote the script for the movie, he was the first person that came to my mind for the lead. If you watch the movie, you would get the impression that he is an awesome dancer.”
Who Is The Champion? is currently showing at GSC cinemas nationwide.
