With Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly playing detective Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson, you can’t blame us for assuming that Holmes & Watson is a parody of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s greatest creation.
But according to director Etan Cohen, this film is a labour of love – one that stays true to the Sherlock canon; Ferrell’s Sherlock will look for clues and come up with logical solutions. In the film’s production notes, Cohen said: “No one is going to expect that from what they might think is Step Brothers 2, but that’s really what we are doing.
Ferrell and Reilly’s most recent collaboration was in the 2008 film Step Brother. Two years prior, they appeared in Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby.
Holmes & Watson was filmed in London, featuring an all-star cast including Ralph Fiennes as the arch villain Moriarty, Kelly Macdonald as housekeeper Mrs Hudson, Rebecca Hall as the glamorous Dr Grace Hart and Rob Brydon as Inspector Lestrade, the head of Scotland Yard.
Here, the duo’s investigative skill takes them to Buckingham Palace, where a murder has occurred. They have to solve the case in four days, or the Queen will become the next victim.
Holmes & Watson opens at GSC cinemas nationwide on Jan 3.
