One of the X-Men going to the dark side is nothing new. Most of the interesting stories in this universe come from that struggle between being good and evil – a problem Magneto faces constantly. In this latest X-Men film, Dark Phoenix, this problem befalls Jean Grey.

This character is not someone to be trifled with; her telepathic ability – when unleashed – may be more powerful than Professor Xavier’s. The film is based on the iconic comic series The Dark Phoenix Saga in which Jean Grey becomes a powerful but corrupted being named Dark Phoenix.

In the film’s trailer, we hear Magneto’s voice: “I know evil. I am looking at it now” and before him stands Jean Grey, with different coloured eyes, looking determined.

Game Of Thrones star Sophie Turner plays the titular role, with Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy returning as Mystique, Magneto and Xavier respectively. Jessica Chastain joins as the villain, simply called Smith, who convinces Jean Grey to become bad.

Dark Phoenix is scheduled to open at cinemas nationwide on June 6, 2019.
