The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) will celebrate its 20th anniversary on Aug 17.

To mark the milestone, The MPO and Dewan Filharmonik Petronas are organising a line-up of timeless music performances by top-notch musicians from August to December.

The 20th Anniversary Special will begin with a gala concert on Aug 17 and 18 with Dutch conductor Jac van Steen bringing to life the works of Rimsky-Korsakov and Smetana.

He will be joined by Malaysian pianist Tengku Irfan who will perform Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1.

The rest of the season will see performances by violinist Soyoung Yoon, cellist Istvan Vardi and conductor Roberto Gonzalez-Monjas.

Audiences can also expect to be serenaded by harpist Leonard Jacome, pianist Stephen Hough and violin virtuosos Ray Chen and James Ehnes.

There will also be special-themed concerts such as The Music Of Billy Joel featuring the vocals of Joel’s protege Michael Cavanaugh in November.


Tomok got his start in showbiz after winning the third season of reality singing show, One In A Million.

In October, science and arts come together with National Geographic: Symphony For Our World and there’s also American band Pink Martini one-night-only concert to look forward to.

In the same month, don’t forget to bring your kids for the Upin & Ipin family-themed concert.

Indeed, local compositions will also be celebrated during Semalam Di Malaya featuring the works of local legends such as P. Ramlee in September.

Malaysian singers Tomok and Black will perform together in a concert in November.

The Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra will give a special concert in December.
