The Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra (MPO) will celebrate its 20th anniversary on Aug 17.

To mark the milestone, The MPO and Dewan Filharmonik Petronas are organising a line-up of timeless music performances by top-notch musicians from August to December.

The 20th Anniversary Special will begin with a gala concert on Aug 17 and 18 with Dutch conductor Jac van Steen bringing to life the works of Rimsky-Korsakov and Smetana.

He will be joined by Malaysian pianist Tengku Irfan who will perform Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No.1.

The rest of the season will see performances by violinist Soyoung Yoon, cellist Istvan Vardi and conductor Roberto Gonzalez-Monjas.

Audiences can also expect to be serenaded by harpist Leonard Jacome, pianist Stephen Hough and violin virtuosos Ray Chen and James Ehnes.

There will also be special-themed concerts such as The Music Of Billy Joel featuring the vocals of Joel’s protege Michael Cavanaugh in November.
