It’s pointless to make a serious monster movie.

Knowing this, director Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure) presents The Meg with a couple of earnest-looking leads – Jason Statham and Li Bingbing – and a few fun and thrilling elements, too. At least it looks that way from the trailer.

The Meg is about a megalodon, an extinct species of gigantic shark that lived approximately 2.6 million years ago, that attacks a submersible housing an international science crew observing deep-sea marine life.

By the time they realise that a 22m prehistoric shark has been hibernating on the seabed of the Pacific Ocean, well, it’s too late. Awake and presumably hungry, the megalodon attacks the craft, causing cracks in its impenetrable glass.

Now it’s only a matter of time before the whole vessel falls apart. So expert deep-sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor has to do everything he can to bring the crew safely back to the surface.

Can he do it? Will the theme from Jaws play in the background? Will Meg Ryan make an appearance? That’s not all. There’s also a giant octopus.

The Meg,  based on the bestselling novel by Steve Alten, costars Winston Chao, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Cliff Curtis and Masi Oka.
