Sometimes, good things in life do come for free. Media Prima Television Networks (MPTN), the media company behind free-to-air TV stations (TV3, 8TV, ntv7 and TV9), has a couple things up its sleeve this year that may excite its viewers.
With its theme for 2018 to “Create and Dominate”, viewers can look forward to more original content not only on television, but also on its multiple digital platforms, as well as on the big screen.
Johan Ishak, the chief executive officer of MPTN, said: “We go beyond TV. Those who want content online, we offer tonton (OTT service) and Studio 8, our multichannel network on YouTube.
“Our animated series Ejen Ali, for example, is everywhere – he is on mobile games, as part of AirAsia’s inflight entertainment and the series is sold to 45 countries.
“Last year our video streaming service, tonton released its first original movie By My Side, starring Jinny Boy, at the cinemas. This year, watch out for Pulang, a Kabir Bhatia film which will be released in cinemas.”
MPTN has a reach of 28 million viewers through its TV channels. TV3 is still the No. 1 mass premium channel. In its mission to keep its audience informed and entertained, MPTN promises to continue investing in local and regional content.
TV3, which dominates when it comes to local drama series, has two new shows this year – Vila Ghazara and Leftenan Zana.
Vila Ghazara revolves around five brothers whose individual lives are controlled by their dominating father. It stars Syukri Yahaya, Azira Shafinaz, Mustapha Kamal, Haleeda Mazlin, Aidil Aziz, Tunku Hanis and Syed Aiman.
Meanwhile Leftenan Zana (Janna Nick) is about Zana who follows in the footsteps of her father, by pursuing a career in the army.
For those who like reality shows, TV3 has Bintang Bersama Bintang, Da’i Season Six, Mentor Otai and Mentor 7.
Football fans can tune in to TV9 to watch the local football matches Liga Super, Piala FA and Piala Malaysia. The station has also a football-related live activity planned called Pentas Kita Juara, as well as a mobile app (Kita Juara) to coincide with the sport.
Online shopping programme CJ Wow Shop has extended its hours (8.30am to 4.30pm) on TV9 and online shoppers can also tune in to Wow Sangat (9.30pm) which is a 30-minute programme hosted by Jimmy Shanley and Nadia Annuar, with celebrity guest host Rita Rudaini.
On 8TV, K-drama fans will be able to watch the series City Of Stars, same time as South Korea. It’s about two men (Hyun Bin and Jang Dong-gan) selected for an astronaut training project.
Another simulcast title on 8TV is Sing! China Season Three.
Come March 5, ntv7 will have a new look and new content to go with its new identity.
“ntv7’s new DNA is Modern Malaysia. We want to conquer the modern market and we believe there are modern Malaysians not only in Klang Valley but also outside of it,” explained Johan.
In line with this, there will be new feel good hosts for its entertainment news on the channel. “We are also introducing two Turkish telenovelas on ntv7, and we’re excited to see how they fare with our audience.”
The first one is New Bride, which revolves around Bella (Jessica May Droclunas) who – at the start of the series – is looking forward to living her dream as the soon-to-be-wife of Hazar (Tolga Mendi).
As any woman knows, living with the in-laws can create all sorts of challenges. Bella’s situation is even more unique since Hazar is actually the heir of a tribe who is devoted to customs and traditions, whereas Bella is an educated young woman with aristocratic background.
The second series is titled Brave & Beautiful, headlined by two attractive actors Kivanc Tatlitu and Tuba Buyukustun. This one has revenge, romance and even murder in its plot.
Ntv7’s schedule for Saturday includes three reality shows – Drop The Beat, I Can See Your Voice Malaysia and Next Gen.
Johan stated: “We work with some of the most talented people in the region to deliver the best content across our television and digital platforms … We provide the best in local and international entertainment ranging from award and reality show to movies and dramas featuring the biggest names in Malaysia and the world.”
