The 2nd Malaysia International Film Festival (Miffest) has appointed award-winning Malaysian actor Jack Tan as its Let’s Watch Movie Icon in hopes of enhancing publicity for the festival by drawing on his influence.

This year Miffest aims to woo a younger audience, so the organisers will be conducting promotional tours to colleges and universities to offer inspiration and support to the next generation of filmmakers.

Miffest will run from Feb 25 to March 2.

Tan, who is part of Malaysian pop duo ThomasJack, has also received a nomination for Best Actor for his portrayal of a teenager trying to make ends meet in Shuttle Life at the 2nd Malaysia Golden Global Awards (MGGA2017). The awards show is the culmination of Miffest.

The young actor has already picked up three Best Actor awards for his role in Shuttle Life last year – at the 20th Shanghai International Film Festival’s Asian New Talent competition in June; at the 12th Chinese Young Generation Film Forum Awards which was held in Wuhan, China in September; and at the inaugural Asean-China Film Festival at Putrajaya, Malaysia in December.

Tan can currently be seen in local Mandarin TV drama Dr Chen’s Diary, in which he plays a young physician who decides to practice medicine in a remote village.

Shuttle Life is the most nominated Malaysian film at the MGGA2017 with six nods – Best New Director (Tan Seng Kiat), Best Cinematography (Chen Ko-Chin), Best Supporting Actress (Angel Chan), Best Supporting Actor (Jack Yap), Best Actress (Sylvia Chang) and Best Actor.

The 2nd Miffest will also see three new categories to enhance the variety of movie recognition this year. The categories are: Southeast Asian Focus, World Cinema, Female Filmmakers In Focus.

Acclaimed Filipino film director Brillante Mendoza will lead the seven-member jury panel which includes French-Vietnamese film director Tran Anh Hung, Hong Kong filmmaker Patrick Tam, Taiwanese film producer Lee Lieh, Indian actress Suhasini Maniratnam, Japanese film director Naomi Kawase and Malaysian filmmaker Dain Said.

The selection committee comprises the chairman of the Chinese Film Association of Malaysia (CFAM) Dennis Lai, filmmakers Bradley Liew, Saw Tiong Guan, Bernard Chauly, Bront Palarae, Leonard Tee, Gayatri Su-lin Pillai and Samad Hassan.

Apart from film screenings, there will be film forums and master classes as well as Q&A sessions for industry professionals and local audiences.

Taipei Golden Horse Awards CEO Wen Tien Hsiang will be conducting a sharing session on Jan 20 at 3pm at Han Chiang University College of Communication in Georgetown, Penang.

A total of 24 international films will be screened during the festival. The festival’s opening film is China’s Love Education and the closing film is Iran’s Yellow. There are 12 films in competition, two of which are from Malaysia: Shuttle Life and Aqerat.

The award presentation ceremony of the MGGA will take place on March 3 at KLCC Plenary Hall.
