Malaysian Chinese radio station 988 has just announced the list of nominees for the Outstanding Regional Artiste (Malaysia) category of the 17th Global Chinese Music Awards (GCMA 2017), and Shila Amzah is the only Malay singer in the running.
If the KL-born Hong Kong-based singer wins, then she will represent Malaysia at the Chinese-language awards show, which will be held in Beijing this year.
This is not the first time the 27-year-old lass has scored a nomination at the GCMA. Two years ago, Shila was the first Malay singer to be nominated as Outstanding Regional Artiste (Malaysia) at the 15th GCMA.
While she did not win in that category, Shila did become the first Malay singer to win an award at the GCMA when she was named the Best Female Stage Performer at the presentation ceremony in Singapore in 2015.
The annual GCMA was first introduced in 2000, with seven affiliate Asian radio stations from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia taking turns to host it. The seven radio stations are Beijing Music Radio, Shanghai East Radio, Music FM Radio Guangdong, Taipei Pop Radio, Radio Television Hong Kong, Singapore’s YES 933 and Malaysia’s own 988 FM.
This year, the awards presentation ceremony will be held in Beijing, and hosted by Beijing Music Radio. Apart from Shila, the other Top Ten nominees for this year’s Outstanding Regional Artiste (Malaysia) include Penny Tai, Danny One, ThomasJack, Orange Tan, FS Fuying & Sam, Ribbon Ooi, Shio Quek, Gin Lee and Namewee.
From now till Oct 18, music lovers can vote for their favourite singers here. For more information about the GCMA, visit 988.com.my. Tune into 988 every Saturday from 3pm to 4pm for the latest updates.
