Triad movie Trivisa was the big winner at the 36th Hong Kong Film Awards on April 9, receiving five awards at the ceremony held at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.

The film, an anthology of stories about three real-life Hong Kong gangsters, beat the likes of The Mermaid and Cold War 2 to win Best Film, while its directors – newcomers Frank Hui, Jevons Au and Vicky Wong – collectively won the Best Director award.

Trivisa’s other awards were for Best Film Editing, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor for Gordon Lam who plays one of the three mobsters.

“It really doesn’t matter how old you are or what your attractiveness is when you act. What’s the most important is to act with passion,” said Lam in his acceptance speech.

Another big winner on the night was the low-budget drama Mad World, which stars Eric Tsang as a father caring for his adult son (Shawn Yue), who suffers from bipolar disorder. The movie won three awards – director Wong Chun was named Best New Director, while Tsang and co-star Elaine Jin Yan-ling were awarded Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress respectively.
