Remember Blossom, Buttercup and Bubbles? This trio makes up The Powerpuff Girls and they were the epitome of Girl Power in the 1990s when the cartoon series aired beginning 1998.
After years of silence, the girls are planning a comeback and they are taking Malaysian singer Shila Amzah along for the ride.
It was announced last week that the 25-year-old artiste has been picked by Cartoon Network to sing the theme song of the new Powerpuff Girls series. Shila will be singing the track, Who’s Got The Power in Bahasa Malaysia and Mandarin.
For those who don’t know, Shila has established herself as an artiste in China, appearing in the popular talent shows Asian Wave and I Am Singer 2 as well as released several Mandarin singles.
“Shila is a genuine Malaysian superstar with a bubbly, empowered personality that exactly mirrors the traits of all three girls.
“Shila Amzah and The Powerpuff Girls are an ideal combination and this partnership is the perfect way to reintroduce our favorite super-cute characters to viewers in Malaysia,” says Mark Eyers, content head for Cartoon Network in Asia Pacific in a press release.
Shila is obviously excited with this new gig as she was a fan of the cartoon series growing up.
She says: “Blossom, Buttercup and Bubbles are girl power icons, and are characters that inspired me when I was growing up. I love that the new theme song is so energetic and up-beat, which is quite different to what I normally perform. It was a thrill to try something new in the way of singing and I can’t wait to see the end product on Cartoon Network.”
A music video featuring Shila and The Powerpuff Girls will be released soon.
Created by Craig McCracken, The Powerpuff Girls earned two Emmy Awards during its 78-episode run.
The all-new The Powerpuff Girls returns on May 2 at 5.30pm on Cartoon Network (Astro Ch 616).
