Strobe lights and dance floors. Hip-hugging flares and platform shoes. Slick dance moves and the best grooves in town. That aptly describes the hit production Saturday Night Fever The Musical, which is based on the phenomenal 1977 movie, starring John Travolta, that sparked a pop culture revolution.
Soon, Malaysians can relive the energy and magic of the disco-era as Saturday Night Fever The Musical struts back to our shores this September. The popular production, which first played in Kuala Lumpur in 2004, will be staged at Istana Budaya in Kuala Lumpur from Sept 4 to Sept 13 as part of the Saturday Night Fever 2015 Asia Tour.
This production is directed by multi-award winning New York-trained director Bobby Garcia, who is a Canadian citizen born in the Philippines
“Saturday Night Fever is a show that has an appeal across the board – from the young ones all the way to the older fans. This is because of the wonderful music of the Bee Gees and the great choreography, which has elements of not only disco, but salsa as well!” said Grace Lee, managing director of Milestone Production, the show’s organiser here.
The musical, which features a main cast directly from Broadway, will showcase glittering costumes, retro cool as well as dramatic backdrops of New York from the 1970s disco era.
Featuring many popular Bee Gees hits such as Stayin’ Alive’, How Deep is Your Love, More Than A Woman and You Should Be Dancing, the show has attracted a multi-generational following and definitely carved a niche for itself in the theatrical stage scene.
In Kuala Lumpur, Saturday Night Fever The Musical will feature a cast and crew of 50, including nine live musicians to rev up the hit soundtrack.
“The nine musicians will be playing in our orchestra pit. The show won’t only be visually stimulating, but musically as well,” added Lee at the show’s press conference at Istana Budaya on June 2.
Saturday Night Fever The Musical tells the story of Tony Manero, a young Italian-American man with a dead-end job and an extraordinary ability to dance. Manero has only one ambition: to become the disco king. When he meets Stephanie, who also dreams of a life beyond the city, they decide to train together for a dance competition, and their lives change forever.
Premiering at London’s West End in 1998 and New York’s Broadway in 1999, the musical has since been watched by over 10 million people in over 2,800 shows in 20 countries.
Saturday Night Fever The Musical is presented by Milestone Production and supported by Malaysia Major Events, a division of Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau, an agency under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.
