Unsure of what to do this weekend? It’s a great time to get a taste of the arts.
Head down to The Gasket Alley in Petaling Jaya for Panggung Riuh, the latest installment of the monthly creative platform Riuh In The City.
On July 27 and 28, Riuh is focusing on the arts, particularly visual art and performing arts.
For visual art, you can expect The Gasket Alley’s laneway area and special rooms to be filled by interactive installations, wood carving workshops, projection painting performances, photography exhibitions and more.
As for performing arts, be entertained by the many dances, music, improv comedy, poetry and theatre shows – both traditional and contemporary (and some, a fusion of both).
With so many things going on, however, it’s easy to get a bit overwhelmed.
Worry not, as we have prepared a list of some interesting things to investigate at Panggung Riuh.
Here’s five highlights to get you on your way:
1. Building Blocks by Fariza Basri
Inspired by her late father’s passion in painting, Fariza Basri is committed to continue her inherited talent by becoming a self-made artist. She will be bringing selected pieces from her Building Blocks exhibit to Panggung Riuh. Building Blocks represents Fariza’s journey in art, comprised of many miniature drawings which, when combined together, serve an ever changing and progressively bigger narrative.
2. Buka Mata by Mula Zine
Buka Mata is a photography and performance exhibition by Mula Zine that conveys the traditional folklore belief that Malaysians have toward proverbial women ghosts. The different casts in every photo represents a different approach toward the spirits, and offers the audience an invitation to appreciate them (in co-existence or disbelief) instead of the implemented fear passed from generations. Mula Zine, formed by photographer Alia Soraya, and influenced by indie magazines like Dazed and i-D, is an online platform for creatives to network.
3. Fusion Wayang Kulit
See your favorite sci-fi and superhero movies like never before! Fusion Wayang Kulit is known for reviving traditional wayang kulit and shadow puppet arts by combining it with digital multimedia mediums. At Panggung Riuh, it will be performing wayang kulit versions of Star Wars and the Batman film The Dark Knight.
4. KL Shakespeare Players
“But soft, what light through yonder window breaks?” The KL Shakespeare Players will be performing a storytelling session of the classic Shakespeare tragedy of Romeo And Juliet. This is an interactive 60-minute interactive theatre show mostly aimed at children.
5. Wood Carving Workshop by Rico Leong
Pick up a new skill this weekend and learn the traditional art of woodcut printmaking. Sabah-born woodcut artist Rico Leong will guide you on how to carve your own wood print and to create patterns transferable onto fabric or paper. This is a workshop for beginners/intermediates on the basics of woodcut printmaking. Get familiar with carving tools and essential techniques that goes into one of the most ancient methods of printmaking. It’s your time to get your hands dirty!
Panggung Riuh takes place at The Gasket Alley, Lot 15, 13, Jalan 13/6, Seksyen 13, Petaling Jaya, Selangor on July 27 and 28. Open: 5pm to midnight. Free admission. More info on the weekend’s programming: www.riuh.com.my.
