Shaibha Vision and Kalpana Dance Theatre present the premiere screening of the movie, His Father’s Voice, here in Malaysia on May 19 at 3pm, at the Lotus Five Star State Cineplex in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
The debut English feature film by Indian writer-director-cinematographer Kaarthikeyan Kirubhakaran, is a drama about a gifted male dancer, separated from his musician father in childhood.
“It’s not everyday that you will get the opportunity to see a film like this. This movie has been very sensitively made, with exceptional music, renowned bharatanatyam dancers and other artists bringing an authenticity to their roles,” says Shangita Namasivayam, Kalpana Dance Theatre’s artistic director.
“I also know many of the dancers in the movie personally, and so I am happy to share this movie, and have Malaysia watch it even before it’s theatrical screening in India!”
Shaibha Vision’s Shaila Nair is equally excited, as a local actress-musician herself, to be able to promote a culturally rich family drama like this.
“It’s a movie with good family values, and it’s also great to see how dance has progressed, and is now viewed as a serious profession. It also marks how Indian cinema is getting international exposure and acclaim.”
This film is now available on Amazon Prime in the United States, Canada and Australia.
It stars Indian actor-classical dancers Ashwini Pratap Pawar, P.T. Narendran, Sudharma Vaithiyanathan, Christopher Gurusamy, Julia Koch (Swiss), and Jeremy Roske (American).
The storyline begins with Americans Jon, Clara, and their son Kris, living in with Parvathi, Nagarajan and their daughter Valli, in a dance-music school in Tamilnadu, India. When Clara gets envious of Parvathi’s influence over her husband, and her son, she leaves Jon and takes Kris with her. Years later, Kris returns to reconnect with his father.
With music composed by Mumbai-born classical and folk composer-vocalist Vedanth Bharadwaj, His Father’s Voice explores culture, human relationships and the process of healing through the lens of Indian performance art, offering a rare showcase of classical music and bharatanatyam.
This will be a single screening of the film. Celebrity dancer, Anita Ratnam from Chennai will also conduct a ‘Meet and Greet Session’ with some of the film’s cast and crew including director Kaarthikeyan and actors Ashwini, Narendran and Roske.
