The upcoming one-day event Make Analog Great Again bears no connection to US politics, although one could say it is a campaign of sorts – one that seeks to encourage and rekindle interest in analogue photography, creative collaborations and the DIY spirit of self-published zines.

This April 20, head on over to Awe Gallery in Petaling Jaya for MAGA.zine Exhibition (Make Analog Great Again) 2019, an analogue photography exhibition and fanzine launch.

This is the first project organised and curated by creative duo Real Deal, which comprises Syafiq Misrom and Afzal Rumaizei.

The photography exhibition showcases the work of eight photographers, while the fanzine, designed by Najmi Arifin, is a photography compilation from film photography collective Kelab Visual members.

“There is a growing community of analogue film photographers in Malaysia. They shoot and develop their own film, and still believe in the DIY-ness of analogue photography. Most of their work is just shared online, via Instagram and websites like Lomography.com. So what we want to do is document the material from analogue cameras and film photography, in a very hands-on way, that can be enjoyed by all,” says Shafiq.

He hopes that this zine launch will be the first issue of many. The unique thing about a zine, he shares, is that even a small group of people can put their heads together and spread their message through this DIY medium.

“It is interesting how a zine can affect me personally, just reading this small book filled with ideas and messages from people around the world, even though I do not know who they are. It gives me this special kind of sensation in my gut, and this is exactly the kind of feeling I wish to share with others through this event,” he says.

Holding true to the collaborative spirit upon which Real Deal was founded, MAGA.zine Exhibition (Make Analog Great Again) goes beyond its two photography and zine mainstays: it also offers a Film Junkie Market, where you can hunt for analogue film photography equipment and other collectibles; silkscreen printing by Bogus Merchandise; and live animation by visual maker Azrol Syakirin aka Monameqa.

Doors open at 11am and the day will kick off with a sharing session by Real Deal’s founders Syafiq and Afzal, fanzine designer Najmi and Kelab Visual’s founder Faiz Aziz.

This will be followed by deejay/music performances by Farina, Bayangan, Sasha Ningkan and DJ Miko from 2pm onward.

MAGA.zine Exhibition (Make Analog Great Again) 2019 is on at Awe Gallery, 21, Jalan 20/13, Taman Paramount, Petaling Jaya, Selangor on April 20, from 11am to 9pm. Admission: RM15 (free admission for those who bring their film cameras). FB: Realdealhq or @notrealdeal on Instagram.
