Local dance studio Fame Studio is bringing together four top Argentine tango dancers and a European tango orchestra for what promises to be an evening of dazzling music and scintillating dance moves at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac) on March 23.

The touring Scent Of Tango show – named after the award-winning movie Scent Of A Woman which features a famous tango scene – features 2014 Mundial World Tango champions Sebastian Acosta and Laura D’Anna and Argentine professional stage tango dancers Roberto Castillo and Julieta Biscione.

“We want Malaysians who are interested in art and culture to take this opportunity to get to know this (tango) art form,” says Fame Studio co-founder Jeannie Low, who is also the show’s producer.

In the Scent Of Tango show, Acosta and D’Anna are more focused on classic and traditional moves, while Castillo and Biscione take on a more contemporary approach to tango.

Low says that Castillo and Biscione are particularly the pair to look out for as they have danced together for 13 years, developing their own tango style with top choreographers such as Carlos Rivarola, Elina Roldan and Julio Balmaceda.

Fame Studio, formed in 2014, has been active in promoting Argentine tango by conducting classes and organising workshops.

The music for the Scent Of Tango show will be played live by Italy-based tango outfit Hyperion Ensemble.

For this show, the group will be performing popular tunes by Astor Piazzolla, Francisco Canaro, Osvaldo Pedro Pugliese and Juan d’Arienzo.

Formed in 1992, the ensemble has performed all over Europe, offering a wide repertoire ranging from traditional to contemporary tango.

It has released tango albums, including  Livin’ Tango (1998), Corso Buenos Aires (2005) and Tango 9 (2016). Note: this ensemble is not to be mistaken for the Romania-based chamber music ensemble which goes by the same name.

Scent Of Tango is supported by the Embassy of Argentina in Malaysia.
